MATTAPOISETT The Town of Mattapoisett, Massachusetts is a coastal community located on Buzzards Bay. The name "Mattapoisett" is said to be an old Indian term meaning "a place of rest." Indeed, as this summer community became more popular for its scenic harbor and relaxed setting, it has lived up to that Native American designation. Originally a part of the adjacent Rochester, which was settled in 1750, Mattapoisett later incorporated into a separate township in 1857. With a vibrant harbor at its disposal and the whaling industry in nearby New Bedford thriving, Mattapoisett's key industry became shipbuilding and they were four major shipyards operating in town in the 1800s. It is estimated that about 400 ships were built in Mattapoisett over a period of 100 years. Among the vessels built in Mattapoisett were the Acushnet, on which writer Herman Melville took the voyage that inspired the novel Moby Dick, and the Wanderer, the last working whaling bark which sadly ran aground on the rocks off Cuttyhunk Island in 1924. Today the town's scenic Ship Yard Park stands as a testament to the community's former livelihood. The flagpole in the park was originally the mizzenmast from the Wanderer, but the weathered pole was replaced in 1993. Other sites of interest include the historic Ned's Point Lighthouse and Veterans Park.
