ROCHESTER

The Town of Rochester, Massachusetts was first settled shortly after the Pilgrims landed at nearby Plymouth Rock in 1638. It was named for Rochester, England, from where many of its first settlers came. It was later founded in 1679 and formally incorporated as a town on June 4, 1686. At that time the large township included the adjacent seaside communities of Mattapoisett and Marion, along with portions of present-day Wareham.

After losing its coastal industries when Mattapoisett and Marion broke off in the 1800s, Rochester turned its attention to logging and farming, and the rural community still retains some of the farms that began over 300 years ago. Like many farming communities in southern Massachusetts, one of its most popular crops is the cranberry. But there are also some remaining livestock farms including pigs and horses, an example of the latter being the sprawling East Over Farm which is now a conservation reserve.

A large, land-locked community, Rochester boasts an area of 36.39 square miles and directly borders seven adjacent towns include Lakeville and Middleboro on the north; Wareham and Marion on the east; Mattapoisett on the south; and Acushnet and Freetown on the west. Among its many historic landmarks at the centrally-located Town Hall, First Congregational Church, Joseph H. Plumb Memorial Library, and several burial grounds with gravestones dating back to 1707.
