Summer Reading Program kicks off at the MPL

Tuesday, June 11is the first day you can register at the Mattapoisett Free Public Library (MPL) for our children’s summer reading challenge. Drop by the library to complete your registration form and receive a free chain with a special tag and a time reading log. Track the time you read to earn prizes, beads for your chain, enter to win our raffle baskets, and be invited to our annual summer reading celebration featuring performer Roger Ticknell on August 2at 10:30 am.

            This year’s theme is “A Universe of Stories” in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing. The library has six weeks of programs themed around space travel and the moon that are geared towards our young readers and families. Our first big performance is Thursday, June 27at 10:00 am with Dinoman!: Space. Dinoman! Will take you on an imaginative journey with his inflatable dinosaurs to learn about outer space. This program is open to all ages and has no registration.

            The week of June 25will also be the start of our many on-going events:

-Tuesdays at 10:30 am: Family Story Time; 1:00 pm: Out of this World Reading; 3:00 pm: Sci-fi Book Club

-Wednesdays at 3:00 pm: Imagination Nation Writing Club and 5:00 pm: Chess Lessons

-Thursdays at 3:00 pm: Family “Space Themed” Movies

-Fridays at 10:30 am: Songs and Stories with Miss Chris and 1:00 pm Crafts

-Saturdays at 10:00 am S.T.E.(A)M. at your Library: Space Theme

            This is just the beginning of our programs. Other upcoming events include the Museum of Science and their inflatable planetarium, a telescope demonstration, a special art program making space banners, a Moon Landing Celebration, and a Harry Potter Birthday party!             Mattapoisett Free Public Library is also having events for our teens and adults. The teen and adult summer reading program will begin on June 18with Discover the Universe of the Mattapoisett Public Library Bingo! This bingo game is designed to keep you busy all summer long while learning about everything the Mattapoisett Free Public Library has to offer. All you need to do is go to the library to pick up the bingo cards. As you complete “bingos” you will be entered to win a gift basket for the adult patrons and a 3D pen for the teens. The teens will also receive small prizes for each bingo they earn.

            On Saturday, June 29from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm, patrons are invited to join us to celebrate the new season of “Stranger Things.” There will be Stranger Things-related craft, paint your own demo-dog, Dungeons & Dragons, and snacks. Please register for the craft and Dungeons & Dragons before June 15.
