The Elizabeth Taber Library Board of Trustees named Kayla King as the library’s executive director.
King previously worked at the Fall River Public Library, where she served as assistant library administrator and held roles of increasing responsibility supporting library operations, public services, programming and community engagement. She earned her Master of Library and Information Science degree from the University of Rhode Island.
King replaces Emily Newell, who served as interim director after Elizabeth Sherry left the post in June, following more than six years in the role.
“I am excited that I will really be able to get to know the library and the Marion community,” King told The Wanderer. “In just my first week, I have already observed how integral the library is to the community and how many people regularly come to the library to work, study, attend programs, play with their kids, and contribute to the library. I believe working in a smaller community will allow opportunities to form more impactful relationships between the library and organizations and individuals in town.”
In her role, King says she hopes to expandthe library’s programming.
“We have this beautifully renovated building, which I believe can serve well as a community hub and important third space where residents can gather, learn, be entertained and meet their neighbors,” she said. “So much of life is digital these days, and while digital resources are important and something that libraries can support, I think a lot of folks are looking for that togetherness and community that libraries can also foster.”
King also brings her love of books to the role. The new library director says she reads broadly across fantasy, historical fiction, mysteries, nonfiction, contemporary fiction, romance and science fiction.
“Good prose and a compelling story are far more important to me than genre. Most recently, I’ve enjoyed reading the Ana and Din mystery series by Robert Jackson Bennet, but I will definitely have a new favorite if you ask me next month,” she said.
In the announcement, the board of trustees noted King’sstrong public-service orientation and hands-on experience in library administration, patron services, digital resources, collection support and community programming.
“Her appointment reflects the Elizabeth Taber Library’s continued commitment to serving as a welcoming, vibrant center for lifelong learning and connection for residents of Marion and the surrounding community,” according to the announcement.
“Kayla’s experience, energy, and deep commitment to public libraries make her an outstanding choice to lead the Elizabeth Taber Library,” Riley Calhoun and Ana Francisco, co-presidents of the board of trustees, said in the announcement. “We are excited to welcome her to Marion and look forward to working with her as she builds on the library’s proud history while helping shape its future.”
The library will hold a reception on Thursday, September 24, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The board of trustees invites the community to welcome King at the reception, or during the library’s regular hours and upcoming programs and events.
