On July 9, all of Massachusetts was categorized as being in at least a Significant Drought, or Level 2 on a scale of 0 to 4, in an announcement by the state’s Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA). This followed heightened alertness after June’s below-average rain, high temperatures, and diminishing groundwater levels.
This week and last have seen some rain, but it has been sporadic and inconsistent. In its announcement, the EEA said, “While much of the state received much-needed rainfall this week resulting in temporary increases in streamflow, Massachusetts continues to experience the effects of two years of below-average precipitation. During June, the state received between 1.5 and 4.5 inches of rainfall.”
Their statement continues and highlights Plymouth County, noting, “Precipitation deficits continue to persist in all regions; greatest deficits on the Islands and the eastern and far southwest parts of the state.” The state confirmed the eastern region has received 50 to 75 percent of its normal precipitation levels.
For a Level 2 drought, which the Tri-Town is in, the state recommends businesses and residents minimize overall water use; follow local water use restrictions; fix indoor leaks from toilets, faucets, and showers, which account for more than 60 percent of indoor use; and for larger buildings and businesses, conduct water audits to identify leaks and water conservation opportunities.
Largely, these recommendations are non-binding and are just that: recommendations. However, the state does hope municipalities propagate the same warnings. Marion did this last week, reminding residents that mandatory water restrictions are in effect through September 15, focusing on daytime outside watering and car washing. Though this week brings some respite with rain, it will likely not be enough to dampen our droughted soil or fully break our drought status. Current El Niño forecasts predict less and generally variable precipitation over the next year, including winter, likely exacerbating and prolonging this problem.
