The Mattapoisett Road Race will again take place on this Saturday, the 4th of July.
The first race was held in 1971 with a mere 15 runners and was organized by Bob and Doris Gardner. Now, the race boasts an enormous 1000 competitors of all age brackets, from all over. Crowds line up along the 5K’s path in the event that will kicks off America’s 250 celebrations in the area.
Racers start on Water Street, circle through town, go south to Ned’s Point and around the lighthouse, and then back to Shipyard Park for the big finish.
Lenore Henderson from the Road Race Committee stated in the race’s long history, over $200,000 has been raised and awarded to college-bound student athletes from the Tri-Town.
All registrations for the race are now online at mattapoisettroadrace.com. Same-day registration is available but is also online. Number pickup is from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm on July 3 and 7:30 am to 8:30am on July 4. The race starts at 9:00 pm at Shipyard Park!
