Edward Gorey and the Tao of Nonsense

Are you only familiar with Edward Gorey because he created the original drawings for the opening and closing title sequences for the PBS Mystery! series? In fact, Gorey (1925-2000) was more than an influential author, illustrator, and book artist – he remains one of the foremost creators of nonsense literature. On Sunday, November 17from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm the Mattapoisett Free Public Library will host Gregory Hischak, curator of the Edward Gorey House in Yarmouth Port, to discuss Gorey’s extraordinarily productive broad career as well as his cultural influence on design, fashion, film, and literature. Hischak will also cover Gorey’s nonsense works, originating in traditions established by Edward Lear and Lewis Carroll, that evolved into a body of literature that remains whimsical, fantastical, and startlingly contemporary.
