Rescheduling for Sandy

While Old Rochester Students had a small break due to Sandy, the following weeks up to Thanksgiving are pretty packed for students.

On Wednesday, November 7, The Danversport Yacht Club in Danvers, MA will hold the Annual Service Academy Information Night. This is for all students and parents interested in any of the different service academies. Academy cadets, midshipmen and congressional staff will be at the event to talk to parents and students about the entire process and answer any questions they might have. For more information, seek the guidance office.

On Thursday, November 15, a MEFA representative will hold a seminar for college-bound students and their parents on paying for college. This will take place at 6:30 pm in the Junior and Senior High School’s media room.

On Saturday, November 17, the Universal Technical Institute will hold its annual Powerpalooza event from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. The event is free and students will receive a free lunch. Attendees will get to see what it is like to be a student at UTI and there will be several different seminars, including automotive workshops and diesel workshops.

For sophomore and junior girls interested in writing, there is a poetry contest called the Smith College Poetry Prize. This contest is only for New England residents and has a $500 prize for the winner. Submissions must be one poem per student and can be no more than 25 lines. The deadline is December 1st: for more information or for the entry form, go to www.smithcollege.edu/poetrycenter/highschoolpirze.html. There is no entry fee.

Also coming up is one of the Norwich University Youth Leadership Conference Weekends. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors with a GPA of 2.5 or higher and a $75 entry fee can secure a spot in the conference. It will allow you to meet new people and to challenge yourself mentally and physically. Entries must be submitted at least three weeks before the program starts to get a spot. Upcoming dates are December 7 – 9, February 1 – 3, March 1 – 3, and March 29 – 31. For more information, go to www.norwich.edu/admission/visiting.
