Golf, Girls’ XC Remain Undefeated

Here’s a look into the third week of action for Old Rochester Regional High School sports teams, as golf and girls’ cross country continued their undefeated seasons, and volleyball made some major strides.

Football: This week’s much-anticipated game against Apponequet came down to the wire, but it didn’t produce the desired results. However, there’s plenty of good news, as sophomore running back Harry Smith continues to shine, and junior quarterback Cam Hamilton continues to improve and gain control of his offense. However, the banged-up Bulldogs dropped a 20-15 decision to one of their biggest rivals. Smith ran 27 times for 149 yards and a touchdown, continuing to show his worth as a feature back. Hamilton also ran for a touchdown, but was sacked a few times and intercepted once. He did complete four passes for 73 yards to senior tight end Sean Hopkins, who was back from injury. His 53-yard catch put the Bulldogs close to the red zone with over a minute left in the fourth, but Apponequet’s tough defense prevented the comeback. So despite the loss, there were plenty of positive things to take away. Next Friday, the Bulldogs return home to face rival GNB Voc-Tech in a search for their first win.

BoysSoccer: The week began for the boys with a 3-1 loss to Dighton-Rehoboth. ORR’s lone goal came from senior Brett Noone on a pass from fellow senior Kyle Medeiros. Junior Sam Henrie continues to get the ball most of the time in the net where he’s been improving in his return to soccer. Wareham didn’t provide much competition on Wednesday as the boys rolled over them 8-0, with Henrie and sophomore James Dwyer playing a scoreless game in net to back up the offensive outburst. A rematch with Bishop Stang on Saturday resulted in a 4-1 loss, with the lone goal coming from junior Alex Sousa as the boys were outshot 23-8.

Girls’ Soccer: On Monday, the girls started off the week with a 2-1 loss to Dighton-Rehoboth. The game was tied at the half, but D-R scored 10 minutes into the second half and held on for the win. The lone goal was scored by freshman Maddie Demanche, and she was assisted by sophomore Rachel Demmer, as young players continue to step up for the Lady Bulldogs. The girls pounded out a 9-2 victory over Wareham on Wednesday, even after getting themselves into a 2-0 hole. Sophomore Maddie Cooney scored her first goal for the varsity squad. The girls have a busy slate next week with three games all against conference rivals, two of which are at home.

BoysCross Country: In their first 5K meet, boys’ cross country split a tri-meet with a loss to D-R and a win over Bourne. Freshman Adam Sylvia continued his stride with a 17:54 race, coming in third overall. He was followed by juniors James Goulart (18:42) and Connor Farney (18:45), with sophomore Evan Tilley (18:54) following. The team headed up to the Frank Kelley Invitational Meet in Wrentham on Saturday, where Sylvia ran a 10:42 in the 3K freshman meet, coming in second. Goulart and Tilley led the pack in the Boys’ JV meet and were followed by juniors Eric Souza, Jacob Spevack, and Ryson Smith. The boys have a bye week next week, and they’ll square off against GNB Voc-Tech and Case at home (Washburn Park) on October 6.

Girls’ Cross Country: The girls continue to steamroll their opponents with a pair of clean sweep 15-50 victories over Bourne and D-R on Tuesday, September 22. They took the first 10 spots before a runner from an opposing team finished, led by seniors Maddie Meyer (20:20) and Nina Bourgeois (20:31). Behind that dominant pair was junior Avery Nugent (20:51) and sophomore Madeline Scheub (20:56). At Saturday’s Frank Kelley Invitational Meet in Wrentham, Scheub won the J-V meet with a time of 20:33, while Meyer (20:05) and Bourgeois (20:13) paced ORR’s girls in the varsity meet. Being an invitational against a large number of schools, the meet had no bearing on the standings, yet kept the team in shape as they look to remain perfect. The girls have a bye week before their next meet on October 6.

Volleyball: One of the strongest volleyball teams in years dominated against Dighton-Rehoboth on Monday, winning three of four sets. Seniors Michaelah Nunes (19 assists) and Olivia Bellefeuille (nine kills) led the charge. On Wednesday, the girls defeated Wareham in three successive sets: 25-7; 25-14; 25-11. Senior Madeleine Lee had 10 consecutive service points, and the defense was provided by fellow seniors Zoe Smith and Hayli Marshall, who each recorded three blocks. The girls have three games on the week starting September 28, facing GNB Voc-Tech, Case and Apponequet.

Golf: This team came into the week undefeated and started off with a very close win over non-conference Dartmouth High. The boys took a 265-266 win as sophomores Collin Fitzpatrick and Jacob Yeomans each shot a 41, while junior Tyler Mourao shot a 42. The boys crushed Case on Wednesday, winning 172-78 using the Modified Stableford scoring system. Home at the Bay Club (par-35), junior Russell Noonan and sophomore Jason Gamache each shot a 36, and the consistent Fitzpatrick added a 38. Next week, golf has a match every single day of the week, so they’ll be tested in their quest to stay perfect.

Field Hockey: It was a rough start to the week as the girls were defeated 4-0 by non-conference New Bedford High. On Wednesday, they were dealt a 1-0 loss by D-R. One of the highlights was the continued strong goalie play of Riley Goulet (Soph.) and Gates Tenerowicz (Fr.). At Apponequet on Friday, the girls dropped a close 2-1 contest, receiving a goal from junior Alexis Parker. This week, the girls hope to get some more offense as they face non-conference Somerset-Berkeley on the road, and face SCC rivals Case and Bourne at home.

Below are the overall fall team records, followed by the conference records in wins, losses, and ties as of September 27.

Boys’ Cross Country: (3-1-0)(3-1-0); Girls’ Cross Country: (4-0-0)(4-0-0); Golf: (8-0-0)(7-0-0); Football: (0-3-0)(0-2-0); Volleyball: (5-2-0)(3-2-0); Field Hockey: (3-3-1)(3-2-1); Boys’ Soccer: (3-4-1)(2-2-1); Girls’ Soccer: (3-1-2)(3-1-1).
