New Home’s Four-Car Garage Approved

The Mattapoisett Zoning Board of Appeals met on Thursday, October 15, and heard two petitions: one for a variance and one for a special permit.

The board began with the hearing for Andre Rieksts and Lisa Francis of Taunton. The couple seeks to construct a 6,000-square-foot new home and four-car garage on the vacant lot at 2 Boardwalk Drive, a roughly six-acre lot that connects to Park Lane. The garage exceeds the allowed square footage, though the board had received three letters in favor of the project from abutters.

“I’m building a custom home that my wife and I designed,” Rieksts told the board. “We’ve been in the process of trying to get a building permit and planning our retirement here for eight years.”

He noted that over that time, they have altered plans and added various things to the plan, which now incorporates their daughter and son-in-law, as well as Francis’ mother, into the home’s plans.

The nearly 1,400-square-foot garage is to accommodate said family members’ cars and would also contain a second entrance to access the daughter’s section of the home. There were no public comments, so the board closed the public hearing and moved to discuss amongst themselves. They offered no comments and quickly moved to vote on the project, which they all voted in favor of. Thus, the variance was granted.

Next was the hearing for the application of Deidre Galway for a special permit and variance to construct a 7.5-foot-by-11-foot storage (originally proposed as a bathroom) addition and a 12-foot-by-12-foot porch addition at 18 Sagamore Road. Project lead David Davignon explained the proposed extensions to the home, originally built in 1964 on the corner of Sagamore and Antassawamock Road. Davignon explained the porch and interior storage additions would be adjacent to and to the rear of the cottage.

The board moved to approve the project, which they voted on unanimously, and then closed the meeting.

The next meeting of the Mattapoisett Zoning Board is scheduled for Thursday, November 19, a week prior to Thanksgiving, in Town Hall, 16 Main Street.
