Mattapoisett: La Tour de Crème de la Crème

As if a spring bike ride through the country roads of the Tri-Town and surrounding area isn’t already sweet enough, when you top that with a scoop of ice cream at every stop, you experience what should be known as a Tour de Crème de la crème.

Sunday, May 19, was the day the Mattapoisett Land Trust and the Friends of the Mattapoisett Bike path held its sweetest annual fundraiser for the fourth year.

A total of 350 bikers traversed a cumulative 10,000 miles on Sunday, winding their way along several routes – 11-, 19-, 20-, and 25-mile rides – all for a good cause that benefits us all: outdoor recreation.

The two organizations split the proceeds 50/50, with the MLT focused on expanding its trail system and the Friends expanding the bike path to the Marion border.

This year’s event was a success, the MLT reports. And the cherry on top of it all was the perfect springtime weather that held out – except for maybe a brief downpour – an improvement indeed from the recent weather trend. But a downpour didn’t dampen the event that dished out over 1,200 scoops of ice cream from some of the most popular Southcoast creameries and managed to raise $12,000 to enhance outdoor recreation in Mattapoisett.

The tours started and ended near the Town Beach, with participants culminating at the MLT’s Munro Park on Water Street where they enjoyed live music, free massages, snacks, and beer!
