Marion and Mattapoisett held their popular annual Fire Department open houses during Fire Prevention Week, offering families a chance to learn about fire safety and meet local first responders.
The Mattapoisett Fire Department welcomed “several hundred people” to their open house on Thursday, October 8, according to Fire Chief Andrew Murray. The event, held at the Fire Station at 62 County Road, featured a meet-and-greet with firefighters, a Jaws of Life demonstration, an opportunity to explore fire department vehicles and equipment, see Sparky the Fire Dog, and enjoy food and fun activities.
“I want to personally thank all of our staff who put in the time and effort to make the night a success,” Murray said in a statement. “A special thank you goes to our volunteers from the Auxiliary for making sure everyone had food and beverages. Events like this take a lot of work, and I appreciate everyone who helped make it happen.”
Marion Fire Department’s open house event on Friday, October 9, at its 50 Spring Street station also drew a large crowd. The Fire Department operates two fire stations and employs a combination of career and on-call firefighters, plus part-time EMTs and Paramedics who staff the duty ambulance. In 2025, the department responded to 1,691 calls for service, according to the Town of Marion website.
“We take every opportunity to connect with the community with our Fire Prevention and Community EMS programs. We schedule visits at the elementary school and daycare centers and are scheduled to complete over 500 home visits this year to ensure the safety of our residents,” said Fire Chief Brian Jackvony in a social media post following the event.
“The members of Marion Fire/EMS deserve credit for their work in these areas throughout the year, and for making [the event] successful,” Jackvony stated. “I am proud of all their hard work and I am grateful for the support we receive from Marion residents.”
