The Marion Art Center will exhibit the work of artists Pamela Dorris DeJong and Sky Hoyt from September 26 through October 30. Pamela Dorris DeJong is a mixed-media artist whose work brings together healing, environmental awareness, and the luminous qualities of layered painting. Drawing on her background in pediatric nursing, art education, Reiki and years of plein air and mixed-media practice, she creates work that invites viewers to notice beauty, consider new perspectives and reflect on the relationship between art, healing and the natural world. Through mixed media, Pamela explores healing, environmental concerns, and the act of recording this moment in time.
Pamela is drawn to translucent, layered surfaces and atmospheric conditions that create wavering, vibrant color. Years of plein air painting and travel have deepened her connection to land and waterscapes, while experimentation with encaustic and other media has led her toward luminous work embedded with found objects and metals.
Artscope Magazine has described Pamela’s work as “not stopping merely at transforming materials” but as exploring “the healing properties in physical, psychological and relational concepts through the process of artmaking” noting that its “intricately layered, powerful colors and engaging texture” communicate on many levels.
Sky Hoyt is a Connecticut-based artist. She received her BA in Visual Art from Bennington College and continued her studies at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris and the Art Students League of New York, as well as through workshops at Ox-Bow and Anderson Ranch Arts Center.
Originally trained as an oil painter, Hoyt began with traditional still life and gradually developed the layered, mixed-media approach that characterizes her work today. Her undergraduate study of ceramics continues to inform her interest in vessels — their shapes, histories and uses — as recurring forms within her paintings.
Hoyt is represented by Anne Irwin Fine Art in Atlanta, Georgia. Her work has been exhibited in Boston and throughout Connecticut, including at the University of Connecticut’s Alexey von Schlippe Gallery. Her work has also been selected for the U.S. Department of State’s Art in Embassies program and featured in House Beautiful.
