It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Peter E. Sowden, age 83, on August 6, 2026.
Peter was born on April 25th, 1943 in Lexington, Massachusetts, and grew up in Wilmington. In 1964, he married his high school sweetheart, Lorraine (Zuccola) Sowden, and together the family spent more than 60 years in Marion.
Peter proudly served his country in the United States Navy, entering service in 1960 at Little Creek, Virginia. After completing his military service, he began an electrical career in 1964 that spanned many decades. During the 1970s, he also served as a Marion Police Officer.
Peter embraced life outdoors and found great joy in skiing, boating, fishing, lobstering, scalloping, and, of course, clamming in the harbors of Marion. He was actively involved in the Boy Scouts, Marion Lions Club, the O.R.R.H.S Ski Club, and the Middleboro Ski Club. Alongside Lorraine, he enjoyed skiing throughout Europe, creating treasured memories together. Summers often found them traveling and canoeing the Saco River in New Hampshire and Maine or traveling throughout the United States.
A longtime member of the First Congregational Church of Fairhaven, Peter’s faith was a guiding force throughout his life. He generously gave both his time and resources, especially through the church’s thrift store ministry. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need and was known for his kindness, generosity, and quiet acts of service.
Peter is survived by his loving children, Christine Sowden, P.J. Sowden (Sarah Valentini), and Mark Sowden (Melissa). He will be dearly missed by his cherished grandchildren, Justin and Sofia Sowden, P.J. and Owen Sowden-Moore, and Jacob Sowden. He is also survived by his sister, Robin Sowden-Carter, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many dear friends.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Lorraine; his mother, Barbara (Trundy) Sowden, later Sell and Anderson; his father, Milton Sowden; his longtime stepfather, Norbert Sell; and his brothers, Paul Sowden, Norbert Sell, Barry Sell, and Bradley Sell.
While we mourn Peter’s passing, we find comfort in knowing that his spirit lives on in the hearts of those who loved him. He will be remembered not only for what he accomplished, but for the kindness he showed, the wisdom he shared, and the love he gave so freely. His legacy will continue through his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.
Private family services will be held at a later date at Evergreen Cemetery, Marion, MA.
