Lyons’ Trial Set for January 27

Former Mattapoisett Police Chief Mary Lyons is scheduled for a January 27 bench trial to fight charges that Massachusetts State Police made following her July 17 arrest after being pulled over along Route 28 north while returning from a golf outing in Falmouth.

At her July 19 arraignment to respond to charges of Operating Under the Influence and a marked lanes violation, Lyons entered a not guilty plea and was released on personal recognizance. After the arraignment, her attorney Robert Nolan told reporters that there were witnesses whose testimony would contradict the charges.

Lyons, 61, has not been back to Falmouth District Court since the arraignment, appearing in pre-trial sessions via Zoom. Nolan, who last month filed a discovery motion seeking video from the arresting officer’s body camera and dash camera, was back in court on November 18 to seek the trial date.

Since Lyons’ arrest, the Mattapoisett Police Department has been under the interim command of Captain Jason King. Lyons, meanwhile, agreed to terms of early retirement accepted and approved by the Select Board on August 5.
