Sally L. Sleeper Cottrill

Sally L. Sleeper Cottrill passed away on Monday December 4, 2023. She was 77 years old.
Born in New Bedford, MA on December 3, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Donald H. and Esther V. (Sohlman) Sleeper. She was a longtime resident of both Fairhaven, MA and Marion, MA.
She was a tremendous mother who loved her three sons and their extended families dearly. Leading by example, she instilled a strong sense of family values in her children. She gained a strong love for music from her mother and a sharp wit from her father. She was always thinking about and trying to help other people.
Sally was an extremely dedicated employee of the New Bedford Housing Authority, serving as the administrative assistant to the executive director from 1982 until her retirement in 2018. She was also an active congregant of the First Congregational Church of Marion for over 40 years, contributing to the church in several meaningful ways. Other notable community contributions include her service as a Marion Boy Scout Troop 32 committee member for well over a decade, serving in various formal positions along the way. If any person or organization asked her for help, she had a hard time saying "no."
She is survived by three sons, Donald and his wife of Guilford, CT, Eric and his wife, Caryn of Cary, NC, and Andrew and his wife, Andrea of Swansea, MA; four beloved granddaughters, and other extended family.
Her Funeral Service will be held on Friday December 8th at 10 am at the First Congregational Church in Marion. Visiting hours will be on Thursday from 4-7 pm at the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd., Route 6, Mattapoisett. Anne Quinlan

Anne Quinlan, 83, wife, mother, gma, sister, aunt, cousin and friend, left this world peacefully on December 3, 2023. She was surrounded by family and passed away at home after a 2-year journey with cancer.
She was born to Gerald and Abigail Fitzgerald in March of 1940 in New York. The family moved to Mattapoisett in 1945. Anne graduated high school from Sacred Heart Academy then went on to graduate from Stonehill College where she studied to become a teacher. It was at Stonehill where she met the love of her life, Paul Quinlan, whom she married in 1963. Paul remained her lifelong love even after his death in August of 1992. Together, they had 4 children: Kelly Morten of Forest Park, IL, Scott (Anne) Quinlan of Scottsdale, AZ, Katy (Kornel) Balon of Nokomis, FL and Shannon Quinlan of St. Petersburg, FL. Paul's job brought the family from Massachusetts to Illinois in 1976. In 2014, she joined her 2 youngest daughters in FL and eventually settled in Venice, FL.
Anne taught middle school grades at St. Joan of Arc Church in Lisle, IL for 25 years. She stayed busy with endless sewing projects in her work as a seamstress especially during prom and homecoming season for the school kids. She played cards in various bridge groups and maintained many friendships along the way. She returned home to Mattapoisett, MA with her children every summer to reunite with all of her family and extended network of aunts, uncles, and cousins. She gifted her love for Mattapoisett to her children and grandchildren and countless others that visited over the years. "Mattapoisett, it's Special" and Anne made sure everyone knew it!
Anne is survived by her her brother, Michael (Anne) Fitzgerald of Mission Viejo, CA, her 4 children, 8 grandchildren, 1 great grandson, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Paul Fitzgerald, her sister, Kathleen Maune, her cousin and best friend, Marylee Barrett and her dear cousin, Miles "Tony" Murray. Anne's cremated remains will be buried in a private ceremony in Mattapoisett, MA in July of 2024. Patricia D. (Davis) Figueiredo

Patricia D. (Davis) Figueiredo, 87, of Marion passed away at home on December 1, 2023. She was the former wife of Edward J. Figueiredo and the daughter of the late Ferman C. and Dorothy R. (Robertson) Davis.
She was born in New Bedford and lived in Marion for all of her life. She graduated from Wareham High School and raised four children with her husband and was a Brownie Leader, Girl Scout Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother and a Softball Coach. She also enjoyed having holidays and cookouts at her home for family and friends.
Mrs. Figueiredo worked as a town clerk administrator for the Town of Marion for several years and loved working as a Crossing Guard for Sippican School in her retirement.
Pat was a lifelong member of the First Congregational Church of Marion and sung in the Choir and presided over many Christenings in her role as a Deacon and was on many committees. Pat also sung in the Sippican Choral Society for many years.
Pat could always be seen walking in the Village of Marion with friends and her dogs, Yogi and Maggie, respectively as well as playing tennis and riding her bike. Pat was an avid Volunteer having worked storms as a Red Cross Volunteer. She was a member of Penny Pinchers for many years as well as a member of the Tobey Guild where she volunteered at the Gift Shop at Tobey Hospital. Pat also enjoyed traveling to locations such as England, Scotland, Ireland, the Caribbean, Italy, Greece and Egypt to name a few with friends through her retirement.
Pat was known for her sense of fun and was always a good sport. She had many friends with whom she stayed in touch with, whether it be from years ago or more recently. She had an open door policy and was never more happy as having someone stop by for an unexpected visit.
Her Grandchildren were always welcome at her house and enjoyed many a "Sundae" after school at Grammy's house and many, many sleepovers. The yearly summer vacation with her children and grandchildren in New Hampshire and Maine was always her highlight for the summer. Pat could also be seen relaxing at her beloved Silver Shell or Planting Island Beach.
Survivors include her children, Steven E. Figueiredo and his wife Tania of Wareham, Stephanie (Figueiredo) Harding and her husband Richard of Marion, Thomas J. Figueiredo of Marion and Linda L. (Figueiredo) Dronet and her husband Mark of Biloxi, MS; 10 grandchildren, Steven, Jr., Brandon, Kelsey and Shelby Figueiredo, Timothy Harding, Rebecca Andresen, Sophie Harding, Ruby and Nina Figueiredo and Dakota Dronet; a step granddaughter, Ava Reise and several Great Grandchildren.
Pat was predeceased by her brother, Charles R. Davis and his wife, Lucia of Marion and survived by her sister, Barbara D. Hiller and her husband, Ira R. Hiller, III. of Mattapoisett.
Her graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at Evergreen Cemetery, Rte. 6 & Converse Rd., Marion.

Catherine J. "Kay" (Cousey) Levine

Catherine J. "Kay" (Cousey) Levine, 90, of Mattapoisett died November 30, 2023, peacefully in her sleep at Nemasket Healthcare Center.
She was the wife of the late Paul I. Levine, and they recently celebrated their 67th Wedding Anniversary.
Born in Waterbury, CT. She was the daughter of the late Vincent J. and Catherine Cousey. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Marion McGrath, and Patricia Fusco.
She was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Waterbury, CT, where she met the love of her life, Paul Irving Levine.
After high school she worked at the Timex Corporation in Waterbury, CT, for several years before marrying Paul and moving to Boston, MA, where she worked at the John Hancock Company. She then relocated to Brooklyn, NY where Paul was stationed in the U.S. Army. While in New York she worked at Otis Elevator's Brooklyn office, until she and Paul found themselves in Indianapolis, IN, for Paul's final Army duty station. Next stop was Dorchester, then Needham, and finally her beloved Mattapoisett in 1969.
Kay was a long time, active communicant of St. Anthony's Church in Mattapoisett. She served as a Eucharistic Minister, Lecture and Altar Server.
She was also active with St. Vincent De Paul, Nativity Preparatory School, and supported her beloved parish in numerous other ways. In recognition of her devoted service to the Diocese of Fall River, she was awarded the Marian Medal.
She was the proprietor of Fashion Corner Uniforms in Dartmouth for many years until retirement.
She was a voracious reader, marvelous storyteller, and prolific letter writer. She enjoyed staying fit and participated in all sorts of activities including ice skating, tennis, bowling, yoga, aerobics, and tai chi. She was also a long time Boston Celtics fan.
She enjoyed travel and together, she and Paul formed the Mattapoisett Touring Company which allowed them to travel the world together with a wonderful group of friends.
She was a long-time member and past president of both the Mattapoisett Women's Club and the Mattapoisett Council on Aging. She was also a Den Mother for Cub Scout Pack 53 and was a regular parent volunteer with the local Brownie Girl Scout Troop.
Survivors include her 2 sons, Paul Levine and his wife Charlotte of Los Angeles and Brian Levine of Mattapoisett; a daughter, Karen Jermstad and her husband David of Washington; 8 grandchildren, Brittany Levine, Tyler Levine. Paul R. Levine, Colin Levine, Jessica Livolsi, Katie Livolsi, Kevin Levine and Patrick Levine; a great-granddaughter, Olivia Last and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.

William O. Simpson, III

William O. Simpson, III, 69, of Mattapoisett passed away November 28, 2023 unexpectedly at Tufts Medical Center.
Born in Quincy, son of the late Bertha T. (Southerland) Simpson and William O. Simpson, Jr., he lived in Mattapoisett all of his life. He was the proprietor of Seven Seas Marine and subcontractor for Triad Boatworks, of Mattapoisett for 25 years.
More than anything Bill enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He will be best remembered for smuggling them cookies.
Survivors include his son, William O. Simpson, IV and his wife Quinn of East Sandwich; 2 brothers, Jamie Simpson and his husband Bob Dumas of Eustis, FL and Thomas Simpson of Mattapoisett; a sister, Priscilla McDonald and her husband Kenneth of Braintree; 4 grandchildren, Brayden, Emilia, William V, and Jackson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was the brother of the late Evelyn Ellis.
His visiting hours will be held on Friday, December 15th from 4-7 pm in the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd. (Rt. 6), Mattapoisett. Robert A. Grome, 84, of Mattapoisett, formerly of Wellesley passed away peacefully on Monday, November 27, 2023, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born in Newton on February 11, 1939, he was the son of the late Andrew and Mabel Grome.
Bob grew up in Wellesley and graduated from Wellesley High School. He was a member of the Air National Guard. Throughout the years he worked as a maintenance machinist for many different companies including Carlings Brewery, Corning, Balzers, and Contravis.
Bob was married for 31 years to the late Dorothy E. Grome and is survived by his sons Robert W. Grome and his wife Sarah, of Franklin, Allen L. Grome and his wife Laura, of Framingham, his daughter, Brenda L. Swartzel and her husband John, of Holliston and seven grandchildren, Andrew and Melissa Swartzel, Christopher and Nicole Grome, and Katherine, Rebecca, and Rachel Grome. He also leaves his sister Carol Passarello and her husband Al and several nieces and nephews. Bob is also survived by his dear friend, Jo Ann Giovanella.

Alexander J. Thomson

Alexander J. Thomson, aka "Slim", 90, of Rochester, MA passed away November 27, 2023 after a lengthy illness.
Born in Toronto, Canada, he later moved to Massachusetts and became a citizen of the USA. Alex, aka Slim, was a Local 37 ironworker in Providence, RI. He was a skilled auto body mechanic and fixed up many cars.
Alex was the married to the late Betty Ann (Weigel) Thomson for over sixty years. He is survived by his seven children and their partners, Deborah and Allan, of Ontario, CA, Kurt and Jennifer of New Brighton, PA, Holly of S. Dartmouth, Nancy and Linda of Tucson, AZ, Betty Jo and Dave of Rochester, Lynne and Michael of S. Dartmouth, and Pearl of Mattapoisett. Alex is also survived by his grandchildren, Kathryn, Kristen, Robyn, Audrey, Olivia, Ivy, Alexandria, Jacquelyn, Brandon, Monique and Erica, Courtney, Rebecca, Benjamin, Jocelyne, Brooke, Nicole, Michelina, Madison, Bryce, several great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews and last but not least, by his beloved dog, Buddy.
Alex was the son of the late Nancy Guy Peopjes Thomson of Toronto, and Fred Peopjes of the Netherlands and was brother of the late Pearl Russell and Hilda Kitchen.
He and his wife Betty, started Liberty Auto Parts, Inc. in Wareham, MA which became a NAPA auto parts store and expanded into three stores that served Wareham, Acushnet and New Bedford. Alex was a Free Mason and member of the Pythagorean Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Marion, MA. He was also a fast pitch softball coach who won several championships.
Alex enjoyed spending time with family, swimming in his pool, riding on his lawn tractor, and his dogs. He was an avid New England Patriots fan.

Born in Toronto, Canada, he later moved to Massachusetts and became a citizen of the USA. Alex, aka Slim, was a Local 37 ironworker in Providence, RI. He was a skilled auto body mechanic and fixed up many cars.
Alex was the married to the late Betty Ann (Weigel) Thomson for over sixty years. He is survived by his seven children and their partners, Deborah and Allan, of Ontario, CA, Kurt and Jennifer of New Brighton, PA, Holly of S. Dartmouth, Nancy and Linda of Tucson, AZ, Betty Jo and Dave of Rochester, Lynne and Michael of S. Dartmouth, and Pearl of Mattapoisett. Polly-Ann (Cotter) Mort, 89, died peacefully at the Mattapoisett home she loved on Thanksgiving morning.
Polly-Ann was an amazing person whose love for her family and thoughtfulness towards others were central to her life. She loved having the family together. She hosted holiday dinners with a house full of people until she was 81 years old and notably, the last holiday dinner she cooked may have been the most delicious one ever. She truly was the backbone and guiding light of our family.
Polly-Ann was active in Mattapoisett having served as the Guidance Secretary & Registrar at Old Rochester and worked at Town Hall. She is a past board member of the Council on Aging and the TriCounty Music Association. She and her husband were previous co-owners of the Harbor Beach Club. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church where she previously served on several committees. Polly-Ann graduated from Lasalle University.
Polly-Ann is survived by her daughters Joanna Robbins and her husband Tom and Polly Mac Donald and her partner, Bruce Farrington as well as her beloved six grandchildren and great granddaughter. She is sadly pre-deceased by her husband, John, and her two sons, Jonathan and David. She is survived by her siblings, Suzanne Gulbranson and her husband Gary and her brother, Charles Cotter and his partner, Marilyn Saint Aubin. She was predeceased by her parents, Harold and Anne Cotter and her siblings, Mary-Lou McNair, James and Peter Cotter.
Prior to passing, Polly-Ann left written thoughts, something for us to consider. "I want you all to remember, life is not about living forever. It's about making the journey count. I hope you all have a great journey."
A wake will be held on Thursday, November 30, 2023 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm in the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett 50 County Rd. Rt. 6, Mattapoisett. Ralph E. Parsons

Ralph E. Parsons, 75, aka "Rocky", aka "Ralphy", aka "Dad", aka "Papa Ralph", finally allowed his big, generous, fun loving heart to retire peacefully yesterday at his home at Dexter Beach in Marion. Ralph's heart had quite the amazing history. It took its first marvelous thumps in New Haven, CT. His mother Rita, his father Ralph, his brother Gary and his sister Barbara were the first to experience the joy in Ralphy's heart. It was then stolen early on by his beautiful wife of 57 years, Diana (Hedin) Parsons, in the classrooms and hallways of Natick High School. It entertained and delighted friends and family everywhere he took it. Ralph's heart loved to beat on the dance floor, and pumped laughs and frivolity from him at every party, gathering, cookout or dart night he ever attended. Ralph's heart had no boundaries, and allowed him to make friends wherever he went. As a Purveyor of Pickles, a Package Store Proprietor, a Video Vendor, and an Ice Cream Creator, Ralph never let his heart get bored, as new adventures lay around every corner.
Ralph's heart was broken more than once, especially with the passing of his two beautiful daughters, Lisa and Tracy. But it swelled with pride often, over his son Ken and his wife Darla, Tracy's husband Doug, and Ralph and Diana's 6 wonderful grandchildren - Desera, Travis, Kassidy, Holden, Skyler and Kirsten. Most recently, it nearly burst with love for his 4 great-grandchildren - Ryker, Emry, Everly and Mazen.
Ralph was the man who taught other men how to be friends, husbands and fathers. Suffice to say, if you were lucky enough to love or be loved by this man, then you know the world would be a much better placed if everyone was like him. He (and his beautiful heart) will be missed, but never forgotten...

Guy Wayne Asker

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Guy Wayne Asker on November 17, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was determined to reach his 90th birthday, which he did! on July 18, 2023!
Wayne was born in the Campello neighborhood of Brockton MA, and his journey through life was marked by accomplishments, integrity, and a profound love for family, faith, and community. His early years were shaped by his passion for sports, excelling in both football and basketball, which paved the way for his graduation from Brockton High School in 1951. After high school, he continued his education at Storm King Prep School in New York. In 1955, Wayne married his high school sweetheart, Joan Walsh, a Brockton High School cheerleader, forming a partnership that would endure for decades.
For over twenty years, Wayne worked diligently at Asker Bakery in Brockton until 1973 when he transitioned his career to become a real estate broker, establishing Realty by Asker. His commitment to the real estate industry led him to become the President of Brockton Board of Realtors in 1977 and President of Brockton MLS in 1985 serving as a longstanding board member. In the 1980s, Wayne furthered his expertise by obtaining a General Certified Real Estate Appraiser license, founding GWA Appraisal Service, where he continued his work as an appraiser until the age of 75.
Wayne's devotion to his faith was evident throughout his life. He served at Trinity Baptist Church in Brockton and later at Church in the Pines in Wareham. He led numerous Bible studies, leaving a lasting impact on the spiritual lives of many.
Beyond his professional and spiritual pursuits, Wayne generously contributed to his community. He served as a basketball coach for Brockton Christian School and various church basketball leagues. In the 1980s, he moved to Marion, becoming an active member of the Sippican Tennis Club and dedicating his time to the town's Conservation Committee.
Wayne's love for travel was evident in the many adventures he shared with his wife, Joan. They explored the beauty of many parts of the world, including Ireland, Italy, France, and England, with a standout memory being their cherished trip to Israel in 1974 with dear friends.
Wayne is survived by his wife of 68 years, Joan, their four children, Joanne, Amy, Jonathan (Pippa), and Sarah (Andy), and their grandchildren Michelle (Russell), Dan, Samantha (Samuel), Oliver, Dean, and Maxwell. Wayne was preceded in death by parents, Guy and Hazel Asker, and his two sisters, Carol and Beverly. His grandchildren and many nieces and nephews will remember Wayne with affection.
Guy Wayne Asker will be remembered for his kindness, his unique sense of humor, unwavering devotion to his Christian faith, his devotion to integrity and honesty, and his profound love for family and friends.
