Rough Week for Bulldogs

• Old Rochester Boys and Girls Track – The boys and girls faced off in a tough meet against Dighton Rehoboth High School, but the Bulldogs were able to beat the Falcons and maintain their undefeated record thus far. Ally Saccone won both the girls hurdles and high jump, while also placing well in the 300 meter. Over at shot-put, Ryann Monteiro and Cassie Helmar also put forth their best effort to score points for ORR.

In the boy’s meet, David Romanowicz racked up points in the hurdles and high jump. In the 300 meter, Dan Donohue finished first for ORR and let the boys to a victory there. Next up for ORR Track is New Bedford Voke, which is sure to be the biggest challenge for the boys yet this season.

• Old Rochester Girls Basketball – In an incredibly close game, the girls lost to Wareham 57-55 with the final basket scored by Wareham in the final minutes of the game. ORR still had some outstanding players, however, with Katie Wilbur scoring a team high of 15 points, Colby Garstang 14, and Gabby Reuter 12. Next up, the girls face Bishop Stang High School.

• Old Rochester Boys Basketball – Against Case, the boys unfortunately lost 73-67 in overtime. Max Risch led the way in scoring for the team with 25 points, followed by Biruk Legasse with 13 and Matt Teefy with 11.

Against Wareham High School later in the week, things regrettably did not improve for the ORR boys who lost 85-61. Forrest Cote played well with 13 points, Matt Beatty with 16, and Max Risch with 14. Their record stands at 4-3 and 3-3 in the SCC. Next up the boys host Bishop Stang.

• Old Rochester Hockey – The recent game against Cohasset unfortunately saw the Bulldogs losing with a conclusive score of 5-2. The first half of the game was the best for ORR, with Brett Lygren and Max Sherman both scoring to make up ORR’s two goals for the game.

Against Middleboro, however, the Bulldogs fared much better emerging with an 8-1 win. Max Sherman scored three goals, one in the second quarter and two in the third. Also contributing were Bobby Stickles with his first varsity goal, Jeremy Lawton, Nick Goerges, Cam O’Conner, and Cam Severino. Their record now stands at 1-1-4.

Rochester Women’s Club Raises the Roof

In a networking session last Thursday evening, Rochester Women’s Club Co-Presidents Marsha Hartley and Nancy Boutin reviewed the club goals accomplished in 2011. Completing two-thirds of an ongoing roofing project was first on the list.

“We plan to finish the back part of the roof this year… We’re proud of the fundraising and community work we’ve done so far,” said Ms. Hartley.

The meeting recapped some of the community service efforts, including helping a local family by purchasing, wrapping and delivering toys and clothing. Gift certificates to a local grocery store and restaurant were also provided. “We’ll do it again in 2012,” said Ms. Hartley.

The club sends get well cards to locals who are ill, provides a place for the Girl Scouts to meet, took a trip to Boston, sold Rochester afghans (only two left), had a pie sale and appeared on ORCTV to give Season’s Greetings to friends and neighbors.

“This year we’re planning a breakfast for our veterans,” said Ms. Boutin. The group plans to make soup, to take out, on Sundays.

Following the business meeting, a networking session followed, with women speaking about their business and answering questions raised by the group. Jane Taylor, a long time club member spoke about her career as an early childhood coordinator in the ORR School District. Ms. Taylor’s career evolved into a consultant for game brands Milton Bradley and Parker Brothers’. “You’ve got to put it out there,” said Ms. Taylor, ”think about what you want to do.”

Ms. Taylor said she was inspired by the book What Color is Your Parachute, which helped direct her in branching out from her former position into a new and exciting area of children’s books and toys.

Asta Muldoon handed out “dream books” and talked about her financial consulting business. “Older men dominate this business… I want to work primarily with women,” said Ms. Muldoon. The book presented questions about retirement activities and asked readers to project where they wanted to be in 10, 15 and 20 years. “It’s a way to ask you what makes you happy, and there is power in writing it down… once you write it down, you’re more motivated to save for that outcome,” said Ms. Muldoon.

Ms. Hartley and Ms. Boutin own a cleaning business using natural household products. Ms. Hartley also teaches pilates and yoga. Ms. Hartley told the group that she was recently certified by the Arthritis Foundation and plans to work with seniors to improve strength and flexibility. “I’m passionate about it and see what it can do for people to improve their daily lives,” said Ms. Hartley.

“I think this is a great way to connect,” said Robin Martin, a manager of a local bank. “I’ve learned a lot about some of our members tonight.”

The club plans another networking session in March.

The club meets on the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 pm at the clubhouse located on Route 105 near the town center. Dues are $20 per year and new members, from any town, are welcome. For more information, contact Marsha Hartley at 508-322-0998.

SUV a “Total Loss” in North Rochester Auto Fire

Approximately 4:00 pm on Saturday, January 7 – a 2000 Ford Explorer burst into flames on Braley Hill Road in North Rochester just north of the Acushnet line. Rochester Police and Fire Department officials rushed to the scene, and shut off traffic in both directions.

The occupant, an unidentified Acushnet man and his young daughter, had pulled over when an oncoming pick-up truck alerted the vehicle that flames had erupted from a leak under the vehicle, according to bystanders. They pulled over and exited the vehicle and called 911.

“The 2000 Ford Explorer quickly became fully engulfed in flames and was a total loss,” said Rochester Police Chief Paul Magee. No one was injured.

The young girl was wrapped in a quilt blanket and comforted by neighbors as fire officials put out the blaze.

“It didn’t take long for [the Fire Department] to come,” said bystander Tony Sousa. “It blew up a couple of times when we were here.”

“It is your lucky day, you are out of the car. You got to see firemen, but you need not be scared, it is okay. It’s all better,” said an officer to the little girl once the flames were extinguished.

“The cause of the fire is unknown at this time,” added Chief Magee.

Principal Ryan Announces Retirement Plans

After a 14-year tenure as principal of Rochester Memorial School, Jay Ryan informed the school committee at its January 5 meeting his intention to retire in October.

“These have been the happiest 14 years of my life in education. I had very mixed emotions when I made the decision,” Mr. Ryan said, commenting that he is ready to immerse himself into his other passion: the arts. “I am thankful for the support I’ve had over the years.”

Superintendent Doug White thanked Mr. Ryan for his service, and his thoughtfulness of informing the committee in advance so it has time to assemble a search committee and locate a replacement. He said the months of February and March are the ideal times to hire principals. “We need to think about what our process is going to be,” he said.

To jumpstart the process, the committee decided it would hold a public meeting sometime next week to determine next steps, in particular job advertising strategies. “This is an important hire. It is one that need to be thought out well,” the superintendent said, saying that although it is his job to hire principals, he’ll rely heavily on input from the committee and the Rochester community.

Mr. Ryan’s announcement also will help the school plan for next year’s budget, the superintendent said.

The budget subcommittee currently is reviewing next year’s challenges – which include absorbing higher utility costs related to the building addition and spikes in special education expenditures.

In a preliminary discussion, budget subcommittee member Tina Rood said that an increase of $417,000 in the budget next year is necessary to maintain services. “But even with this increase, we would not be replacing a teacher retiring this year. And in the last two years, we have not replaced two other retiring teachers and the Assistant Principal,” she said.

Ms. Rood said challenges loom because the town has asked for a level funded budget, meaning one with no increases at all. “It will be a struggle,” she said.

The budget also includes tuition costs for high schoolers in the town who opt to attend Bristol Aggie. She said any new tuition reduces the regular day budget. “It does have an impact on the budget,” she said.

Moreover, the federal ARRA dollars will not be available this year, as it was in the past two years.

“It’s going to be a team effort to get the budget in a place that supports our students,” she said.

Helping to reduce utility costs at RMS will be district facilities manager Steve Murphy, the superintendent said.

Mr. White said that with the RMS school and expansion project complete – Mr. Murphy will now oversee facilities at that school. When district facilities manager Steve Shiraka passed away in 2010, the town of Rochester’s head of facilities Mike Meunier took over the project and saw it through its completion. The town had requested that the school now oversee the building so Mr. Meunier can focus on town projects.

“That building is absolutely fantastic,” Mr. Murphy said in his remarks to the committee. He outlined several of his energy saving endeavors– including scheduling energy use at the school so it is only used as needed. He said he would carefully monitor oil, gas electricity, and water through a direct digital control system – which he can control from a remote location.

In other business:

• Although RMS food services brought in a $2,744 profit for December, Food Service Director Caitlyn Meagher said that the program still needs to increase participation to come in with a positive balance at the end of the year.

• The committee approved a two-year renewal contract with Braga Transportation, which offered to maintain its fiscal year 2011 rates through fiscal year 2014. District Business Administrator said the deal will save the district $92,000.

• The Early Childhood Fair is scheduled for January 21 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at Sippican School. More information available at 508-748-1863.

Heritage Days Needs Volunteers

To the Editor:

You may be aware that there is an advertised meeting for January 17 at 6:30 pm in the Library meeting room. Since our Sesquicentennial celebration in 2007, this subcommittee of our Historical Commission has tried to keep the feeling of a close, culturally and historically rich community alive. We have offered a variety of events in spite of mosquitoes, high winds and torrential rain. In this process our committee has decreased in number due to those life obligations we all experience. Unfortunately, although the spirit is there, the people power is not.

We are asking for volunteers to assist this program to go forward in 2012. We are not asking a forever commitment but if you, or an organization you belong to, would be willing to help us out for this year, August 3-5, we would greatly appreciate it.

The meeting on January 17 will be the deciding factor. If we have a minimum of 10 volunteers, we will brain storm a theme and organize groups to produce the activities. If not, Heritage Days will not return in 2012.

In the past few years, we have received positive feedback from those who attended one or more event(s) and we really do not want to disappoint or let this feeling of community drift away. It will, however, take a bit more community involvement to bring it back in 2012. Please help us if you can.

Any questions, feel free to email theseamstress@verizon.net. Please put Heritage Days in the subject to assure delivery.

Thank You,
Bobbi Gaspar
