Patricia A. (Glennon) Southwick, 82 of Mattapoisett died October 31, 2011 at Tobey Hospital after a long illness. She was the wife of Raymond C. Southwick. Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Joseph R. and Ellen (Saunders) Glennon, she lived in South Dartmouth for many years before moving to Mattapoisett in 2001. Mrs. Southwick, a realtor, was active for many years in the Republican Club of Massachusetts. Survivors include her husband; her sister, Mary Jane Baylies of Weston; her step-children, Kenneth Southwick and his wife Eleanor of Marshfield and Mary Pomeroy and her husband Jack of Plymouth; 6 step-grandchidren; many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Richard Glennon, Winifred Burke, Joseph Glennon, Jr. and Rita Barry. Her Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, November 3rd at 11 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd. Mattapoisett. Burial in Quincy will be private. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Kevin F. Riley, 60 of Rochester died October 29, 2011 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Providence, RI after a long illness. Born in New Bedford, the son of Maureen D. (Kilner) Riley of Rochester and the late Albert F. Riley, he lived in Hawaii before moving to Rochester 18 years ago. Mr. Riley served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He enjoyed his pets, watching sports and the ocean. Survivors include his mother; 3 brothers, Albert Riley, Jr. and his wife Patricia of Plymouth, Gary Riley of Rochester and Neil Riley and his wife Dianne of Marshfield, VT; a sister, Katherine Riley-Keough and her husband John of Rochester; a niece, Emma Keough of Rochester. Visiting hours Thursday from 9:30 - 10:30 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford followed by his Funeral Mass in Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 11 AM. Jeannette R. (Belanger) Gifford, 89, of Little Compton, RI died Friday, October 28, 2011 at home. She was wife of the late Adelbert F. “Del” Gifford. Born in Dartmouth, daughter of the late Jerry and Diana (Leclerc) Belanger, she had lived in Little Compton since 1951. She was a Communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Church, Little Compton and a member of the American Legion Womens Auxiliary, Little Compton. Mrs. Gifford was known for her cooking and she enjoyed yard sales, antiques and the outdoors, but most of all she loved spending time with her family. Survivors include a son: Richard W. Gifford of CT; a brother: Leo Belanger of Mattapoisett; a sister: Doris Y. Richard of Ft. Myers Beach, FL; and several nieces and nephews. She was sister of the late Dorothy Almeida and Pauline Picard. Mass of Christian Burial to which relatives and friends are invited will be Monday, October 31, 2011 at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Little Compton at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will be Monday from 9 – 10 A.M. prior to the Mass at the Potter Funeral Home. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Westport.

Edward A. "Butch" Manning, Jr., 59, of Wareham died October 28, 2011 unexpectedly at home. He was the husband of Kathleen M. (Saunders) Manning. Born in Methuen, MA, the son of the late Edward A. and Jeannette (Lemaire) Manning, he lived in Rochester before moving to Wareham 11 years ago. Mr. Manning was employed as a master craftsman auto body technician for over 40 years. He enjoyed fishing, the ocean, motorcycle riding and the company of his dog, Cody. Survivors include his wife; a son, James Manning and his wife Kelly Smith Manning of Marion; 2 daughters, Kathryn Manning and her fiance Matthew Bird of Wareham and Jessica DaLomba and her husband John of North Providence, RI; 4 brothers, Kevin Manning of Englewood, FL, Wayne Manning of Milton, Russell Manning of North Andover and Brian Manning of Chester, NH; a sister, Marlene Lemire of Kingston, NH; 7 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. His visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, November 1st from 4-8 PM followed by his Funeral Service at 8 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home For Funerals, 50 County Rd. (Rt. 6) Mattapoisett.

Kenneth C. Smith

Kenneth C. Smith, 80, of Falmouth, died Friday afternoon as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Route 28. Mr. Smith was returning home after visiting his son, Captain Bradley K. Smith of Mattapoisett. He was the husband of the late Jean G. Smith. Mr. Smith had retired from the Falmouth Police Department, where he had served over 30 years. He also served his country with the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean Conflict. He was an avid boater and member and past master of Marine Lodge in Falmouth. He is survived by a daughter, Susan J. Bibbo of Falmouth, a son and daughter-in-law, Bradley and Kay Smith of Mattapoisett, and four grandchildren, Jessica Bibbo of Australia, Stephanie Bibbo of San Francisco, CA and Jean and Anne Smith of Mattapoisett. Christine F. (Leavestrom) Westgate, 81, died Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at her home in Wareham. She was the wife of the Abiel E. “Bay” Westgate, Jr. who died June 16th. Born in Malden, she was the daughter of the late Carl & Brenda (Lindsey) Leavestrom. A graduate of Wareham High School, Mrs. Westgate was a homemaker. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, baking and all the New England sports teams. Survivors include 8 daughters, Ellen Ames and her husband Bradford of West Wareham, Jill Babin and her husband Michael of Wareham, Karen Magalhaes and her husband John of New Bedford, Crystal Adams of Rochester, Kim Dillingham and her husband John of North Dighton, Lori Fournier of Wareham, Randi Hines and her husband Patrick of Barrington, RI and Joy Gomes of Rochester; her sister, Brenda Amerson of Lady Lake, FL; 8 grandchildren, Karl Ames, Kara (Ames) Pinto, Jacen Fernandes, Jayme Amaral, Erin Dillingham, Amanda (Gomes) Spinola, Ryan Adams, Caleb Hines; 7 great grandchildren, Tyler & Dahlia Amaral, Ally & Katherine Pinto, Jayla and Jasmine Fernandes and Julian Spinola. Durval "Duke" Rodrigues, of Dartmouth died October 26, 2011 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of the late Anne V. (Collard) Rodrigues. Born in New Bedford, son of the late Manuel S. and Mary (Silva) Rodrigues, he lived in Dartmouth most of his life. Mr. Rodrigues was formerly employed by the Mass Medical Society as a Government Relations Specialist, and the Mass Hospital Association as Vice President of Health Care Finance and Government Relations. He was also formerly the Associate Director of St. Luke’s Hospital. He was a graduate of New Bedford High School, Class of 1942, and Kinyon Business School. He attended Indiana University, Bay State Realty Academy and Southeastern Massachusetts University. He was a member of the American Hospital Association, the Massachusetts Hospital Association, the American College Health Care Executives, a charter life member Health Care Financial Management Association, former board director and member of the Audit Committee of N.B.I.S., past president of Greater New Bedford United Fund and 1964 chairman of United Fund Campaign, past president of Cachalot Council Boy Scouts of America, past chairman of New Bedford Chapter American Red Cross, past president of New Bedford Community Council, past vice president of Massachusetts Junior Chamber of Commerce, past director of New Bedford Kiwanis Club, past chairman of American Field Service of Greater New Bedford, past chairman of Kiwanis Fresh Air Fund, past president of P.T.A., director of Charles J. Lewin Interfaith Scholarship Foundation, patron of Zeiterion Theatre, member of the 13 Stripers Club, member of the Country Club of New Bedford, Star in the East Paskamansett Lodge A.F. & A.M., 32nd degree Shriner, member of U.S.S. B. Eugene DeFreitas, 87, of Meredith, NH, died peacefully October 26, 2011 at The Arbors of Bedford. He was the husband of the late Marie J. (Dixon) DeFreitas. Born in Boston, MA and lived in Meredith, NH and wintered in Boca Raton, FL. Mr. DeFreitas was the former proprietor of Melrose Bowl-A-Dome and the co-owner of BCA in Saugus for many years. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. during World War II. Survivors include his daughter, Sharon Russo and her husband Stanley of Marion; 3 sons, Walter DeFreitas and his wife Linda of Seffner, FL, Kenneth DeFreitas and his wife Celida of Manchester, MA and Phillip DeFreitas and his wife Caroline of Groton, MA; 6 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was the grandfather of the late Gregory Russo. His Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, November 20th at 10 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home For Funerals, 50 County Rd. Raymond C. Lawrence

Raymond C. Lawrence, age 90, of Rochester passed away Monday, October 24, 2011 peacefully at home after battling cancer. He leaves his wife of 65 years, Agnes “Nan” (Savaria) Lawrence. He was the son of the late George W. and Mildred (Ellis) Lawrence. Raymond was born in New Bedford and lived most of his life in Rochester. He graduated from New Bedford Vocational High School and then served the country in the Army Air Force for four years during World War II. After being discharged, he worked as a construction superintendent for local construction companies in the area including Gilbane, Loranger and Sullivan-Foster. He was also a member of Carpenters Local 1305. Raymond was Rochester’s first building inspector. Raymond, with a strong mechanical aptitude, was happiest when creating a useful tool or implement using parts from obsolete or discarded equipment or appliances. He also enjoyed dining at local restaurants and taking Sunday rides around the region with his loving wife Nan. Raymond is survived by a son and a daughter: Raymond A. and his wife Annette (Robitaille) Lawrence of Rochester and Carolyn McGarvey of Marston Mills. He was also predeceased by an infant son, Gordon. He has six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. He is survived by one sister, Muriel Washburn of Carver. As Raymond was a very private person, there will be no visiting hours and the services will be for immediate family only. Arrangements are under the direction of the Kirby Funeral Home.

Pearl D. “Tweety” (Texeira) Barboza, 68, of Marion, died October 21, 2011 in the Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation Center – Forestview in Wareham. She was the daughter of the late Domingo and Irene (Avila) Texeira. She was born in Marion and lived there most of her life. Mrs. Barboza worked for Carol Cable Company in New Bedford for many years. She enjoyed reading the bible and cooking. Survivors include her son, John R. Barboza of New Bedford; 4 daughters, Johnnie Ann Estrada and Tracy Barboza and Irene Barboza all of New Bedford and Debbie Barboza of Middleboro; 2 brothers, Boy Texeira of Mashpee and Robert Texeira of Marion; 2 sisters, Barbara Texeira and Beverly “Cookie” Tubbs; 15 grandchildren; nephews and nieces. Her memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 3, 2011 in the Tabernacle of Praise, 187 Hathaway St., Wareham.
