Marion Natural History Museum499 viewsDespite the impending Polar Vortex, a small hardy group learned to identify some our local trees and shrubs in winter. Have you ever smelled a black cherry? (Yuck!) Or a yellow birch? (Yum!) We learned about opposite and alternate leaf arrangement on a branch, what lenticels look like on a birch and a hickory, and that you can make tea out of sassafras. Thank you to Sarah Porter for the great program. Photos courtesy Elizabeth Leidhold

The GBBC is a great citizen-science initiative to gauge how our bird species are doing, and all it takes is 15 minutes to count the number of species and how many of each, and submit your findings to Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) website: birdcount.org.
