An advent wreath is a circle of greenery, marked by four candles that represent the four Sundays of the season of Advent. An additional candle is lit as each new Sunday is celebrated in Advent. Marion Natural History Museum219 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's Coastal Exploration group had a wonderful time last week exploring Marion's shoreline, inland wetlands and woodland areas. We collected examples of plankton, caught fish and frogs in our nets, investigated tide pools and took trips to Bird and Ram Island. Marion Natural History Museum218 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum hosted Valentina Lagomarsino, PhD student in the Biological Biomedical Sciences program at Harvard University. Lagomarsino shared her research exploring the similarities between the nervous system of the human brain and the mycorrhizal network of connections between trees. She discussed Susan Simard's work between birch and fir trees, and the connections and sharing of nutrients that was discovered when one tree was placed in shade and a neighboring tree fed Carbon 14.

Betty Parsons218 viewsAt the Marion Art Center on display through October 28 is a retrospective of works done by gallerist and artist Betty Parsons. From as early as the 1930s through to 1980, Parsons received growing acclaim for her ability and wisdom in selecting art done by emerging artists, primarily those expressed via abstract visual interpretations. Parsons was also an artist, described as both a painter and a sculptor for her work in watercolor and acrylic, but also a sculptor for her found items and driftwood creations.

The kids found painted turtles, a garter snake, bull frog tadpoles, green frog tadpoles and salamander larvae. Marion Museum of Natural History217 viewsThe Marion Museum of Natural History would like to thank Karen Alves Cronin and our volunteer parents for the wonderful program March 15. First, Karen showed us how gravity and a simple bucket suspended on a line and filled with paint can produce beautiful paintings. The students painted their canvases with a colorful background and then placed them under the suspended bucket pendulum. When filled with paint and rotated over the canvases.

Pumpkin Palooza216 viewsSaturday’s Pumpkin Palooza hosted by the Marion Council of Aging and the Recreation Department at the Cushing Community Center. Families decorated pumpkins, and children enjoyed face painting, a hula-hoop contest, dancing, a visit from Pine Meadow Farm animals and refreshments supported by Tabor Academy volunteers. Pumpkins were later illuminated, giving the pavilion an eerie weekend presence. Sixty-five families preregistered to participate in the event inspired by Marion citizen Dianne Cosman
