North Atlantic Right Whales194 viewsInside a newly installed mural of a North Atlantic Right Whale across the back wall of the Marion Natural History Museum is the image of two North Atlantic Right Whales as photographed by Dr. Michael Moore while on an expedition. The 40-foot-long, life-sized mural is bordered by shades of brown indicating how the whale has significantly diminished in size even since the 1980s. Photos by Mick Colageo

Marion Natural History Museum193 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's Coastal Exploration group had a wonderful time last week exploring Marion's shoreline, inland wetlands and woodland areas. We collected examples of plankton, caught fish and frogs in our nets, investigated tide pools and took trips to Bird and Ram Island. The museum would like to thank Hannah Moore and David Wilson and Andrew Miller of the Marion Harbormaster Department for their help in making it such a special week. Betty Parsons192 viewsAt the Marion Art Center on display through October 28 is a retrospective of works done by gallerist and artist Betty Parsons. From as early as the 1930s through to 1980, Parsons received growing acclaim for her ability and wisdom in selecting art done by emerging artists, primarily those expressed via abstract visual interpretations. Parsons was also an artist, described as both a painter and a sculptor for her work in watercolor and acrylic, but also a sculptor for her found items and driftwood creations.

The students had a chance to take a close look at some of the artifacts he's found in his backyard and were shown how to use a metal detector to help find some of these items.
