Halloween Parade179 viewsThe streets of Marion were flooded with Halloween Parade participants and attendees, as members of the Sippican Elementary School Band helped the “witches” of the Marion Art Center lead a procession that began at the Music Hall and went down Front Street, up Main Street past the Elizabeth Taber statue and onto Spring Street, where children were met at Town House by staff members handing out candy for the kids. North Atlantic Right Whales179 viewsInside a newly installed mural of a North Atlantic Right Whale across the back wall of the Marion Natural History Museum is the image of two North Atlantic Right Whales as photographed by Dr. Michael Moore while on an expedition. Marion Natural History Museum179 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum would like to thank Andrew Griffith and his wife Lauren of the Massachusetts Butterfly Club for leading our May 10 walk. The museum's community group members had learned about our local butterflies and identified some of the host plants they rely on. Despite the rain earlier in the day, the sun came out and we saw Pearl Crescents at Washburn and Peck's and Zabulon Skippers at Parlowtown Road in Marion. Marion Natural History Museum178 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum would like to thank David Orwig, forest ecologist with the Harvard Forest, for his wonderful presentation about Old Growth Forests on April 7. Orwig discussed some the tree species to look for and explained that the size of the tree does not matter when looking for truly old trees. He showed us how to determine the age of a tree, why the same species of tree might have different bark depending on age and why some of the oldest trees can be relatively small in size. A Vimeo
