Blessing of the Fleet251 viewsThe Reverend Eric Fialho, rector at Saint Gabriel’s Parish, presided as the Town of Marion held its first-ever Blessing of the Fleet on January 1 in Sippican Harbor. One tradition well established the past half-dozen years was the sunflower in the outer harbor, where several vessels tied up to one another at the stern and aimed their bows outward toward the sea in 360-degree formation. Marion Natural History Museum251 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's Coastal Exploration group had a great time exploring freshwater and saltwater ecosystems this summer. We took a close look at tadpoles and salamanders undergoing metamorphosis, spotted turtles fighting with each other, a water snake, silversides and shrimp and much more. Many thanks to Marion Recreation Department for turning on the water at Washburn and to Adam Miller and Zack Ciesielski of the Marion Harbormaster's office for their help collecting plankton samples. Fiber Fusion is the name of the show as well as the name of the five artists whose imaginations are on full display. Christine Anderson, Carol Flax, Lorraine Gentil Hayes, Lisa Horton, and Toni Newhall are Fiber Fusion. Their works bridge the worlds of nature and art in new ways.

Marion Art Center 251 viewsThe Marion Art Center opened its latest exhibit on Saturday featuring the pastel artistry of partners Janet Schwartz and Dave Kaphammer. For years, Kaphammer has been honing his talent for working in a medium that most other artists consider difficult: pastels. Through his vision for finding interesting subjects like abandoned tractors in a field or the way sunlight plays in shadows at the end of an afternoon, we are invited to enter his world of color and shape.

Marion Natural History Museum251 viewsMany thanks to Mike Cronin for sharing his rocketry expertise with our afterschool group. We learned about what’s needed for lift-off and propulsion, as well as how to add the “recovery wadding” and parachute to ensure the rocket doesn’t get damaged. Marion Natural History Museum250 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum after-school group wishes to thank Isaac Perry and the Marion Harbormasters for allowing us to view some of our native ocean birds. On April 27, we were able to make it to Bird Island to view the nesting boxes that have been set up by the state for the soon-to-arrive terns, which rely on this island as a safe spot to raise their young.
