Marion Natural History Museum197 viewsAfter learning how to build a snake hibernaculum, a beaver lodge, and a bear den, the group tried their hand at creating miniatures for museum display. The beaver lodge was tested to see if it held water back and still kept the lodge dry inside. It was a huge success! Crocodile River Music197 viewsOn Saturday, May 17, as part of Art Week, the Marion Arts Center presented Crocodile River Music performing West African music and dance in Marion's Music Hall to an audience of about 70 people. A few children danced happily along with members of Crocodile River Music during several pieces. For the final piece of the event, almost everyone was up and dancing. The energy was terrific. Marion Natural History Museum196 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum wishes to thank Justin Barrett for the fun time we had last week learning about the importance of the Great Backyard Bird Count. The students were able to identify the many species including Starling (small flock), Mourning Dove, Juncos (good views), Cardinal, House Finch, House Sparrow, and American Crow. And they also found an old nest in a tree. After-school programs included "Monarchs" on March 2, and upcoming is "Fossil Hunting" on March 16. Check out our full list of

Marion Village 5k Road Race196 viewsKim Bolick, 29, of Watertown finished first overall in 18:14 to win the Marion Village 5k Road Race that was held on June 25. Will Vrattos, 17, of Marion finished in 18:53 to edge 16-year-old Samuel Shrestha (19:00) of Dartmouth for third place overall and second among male finishers. Massachusetts Fire Academy 196 viewsThe Massachusetts Fire Academy conducted a 48-hour class on Saturday involving Fire personnel from the region at Magnolia Cranberry located on Sherman Briggs’ bog accessible off Front Street. The class focused on operating the engine (pumper) in both rural areas and areas with fire hydrants. Seven students enrolled from Marion Fire Department were enrolled. According to Marion Fire Chief Brian Jackvony, the class was originally scheduled for completion in 2020 but was postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The students had a chance to take a close look at some of the artifacts he's found in his backyard and were shown how to use a metal detector to help find some of these items.

Halloween Parade196 viewsThe streets of Marion were flooded with Halloween Parade participants and attendees, as members of the Sippican Elementary School Band helped the “witches” of the Marion Art Center lead a procession that began at the Music Hall and went down Front Street, up Main Street past the Elizabeth Taber statue and onto Spring Street, where children were met at Town House by staff members handing out candy for the kids. Marion Natural History Museum196 viewsOn November 30, the Marion Natural History Museum's after-school group had a chance to learn about the different types of trees in our area and to look at some equipment used by foresters to help protect our trees. By looking at a tree "cookie," we were able to count the rings to determine its age and learn about the services, the different sections, including the heart wood, sap wood and bark or phloem provides the tree.
