Marion Museum of Natural History202 viewsThe Marion Museum of Natural History celebrated its 150th anniversary with a Friday night discussion on the 700-pound meteorite Coahuila, led by Mark Munkacsy. Later in the evening, Ted and Elizabeth Brainard visited Coahuila with Executive Director Liz Leidhold, while Treasurer Mike Cronin set up a telescope on the sidewalk out front of the Elizabeth Taber Library where attendees took turns viewing Jupiter and its moons. Pumpkin Palooza202 viewsSaturday’s Pumpkin Palooza hosted by the Marion Council of Aging and the Recreation Department at the Cushing Community Center. Families decorated pumpkins, and children enjoyed face painting, a hula-hoop contest, dancing, a visit from Pine Meadow Farm animals and refreshments supported by Tabor Academy volunteers. Pumpkins were later illuminated, giving the pavilion an eerie weekend presence. Sixty-five families preregistered to participate in the event inspired by Marion citizen Dianne Cosman

Our gracious hosts allowed us to explore the island beaches, streams, saltmarshes, open-water areas and Osprey nests. Some of the students who attend our programs had not been in a boat or explored an island before. The museum is so very thankful to the Moores for allowing us to explore and map the island. Marion Natural History Museum202 viewsOn November 15, the Marion Natural History Museum’s community group enjoyed a presentation on the geology of cranberry bogs with USDA soil scientist Maggie Payne. We heard about the glaciers that covered our area and left glacial moraines or hills in some areas of our state, as well as glacial outwash in our area. These outwash areas of sand and gravel can be extremely deep. Chunks of ice melting on the landscape turned into kettle ponds, which filled with groundwater and eventually plants.

Marion Natural History Museum202 viewsOn November 29, the Marion Natural History Museum community group had fun crafting a distinctive butterfly mobile for the museum, drawing inspiration from the detailed illustrations of Maria Sibylla Merian. In this workshop, the participants combined historical accuracy with modern design to produce a captivating display that will hang above our antique butterfly case.
