Marion Natural History Museum172 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's Coastal Exploration group had a wonderful time last week exploring Marion's shoreline, inland wetlands and woodland areas. We collected examples of plankton, caught fish and frogs in our nets, investigated tide pools and took trips to Bird and Ram Island. The museum would like to thank Hannah Moore and David Wilson and Andrew Miller of the Marion Harbormaster Department for their help in making it such a special week. Betty Parsons172 viewsAt the Marion Art Center on display through October 28 is a retrospective of works done by gallerist and artist Betty Parsons. From as early as the 1930s through to 1980, Parsons received growing acclaim for her ability and wisdom in selecting art done by emerging artists, primarily those expressed via abstract visual interpretations. Parsons was also an artist, described as both a painter and a sculptor for her work in watercolor and acrylic, but also a sculptor for her found items and driftwood creations.

Marion Natural History Museum172 viewsOn March 13, the Marion Natural History Museum's afterschool group enjoyed hearing about planets, stars, galaxies and the universe with amateur astronomer Peter Marshall. Peter specializes in studying and taking photos of these rarely seen objects from his home in Rochester, and the kids were happy to share their astronomical insights with the group. Peter also shared incredible photos from NASA's spacecrafts, Voyagers 1 and 2. The students were then invited to create their own planets with the knowledge th

Marion Natural History Museum172 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum afterschool group attempted to get to Bird Island on May 22 to visit the nesting tern population. Unfortunately, due to high winds and rough surf, we didn’t get all the way out there but enjoyed getting soaked on the ride out. We stopped briefly at Ram Island to try to get a little dried off before heading home. The kids had a blast checking out the beach and collecting shells. Thank you to Andrew Miller and the Marion Harbormaster’s office for arranging such a fun day. Pho

Marion Natural History Museum172 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's afterschool group had a chance to explore and map Ram Island with Dr. Michael Moore and Mrs. Hannah Moore this week. We investigated salt marshes and mapped osprey nests, found some horseshoe crabs and met some donkeys, chickens and friendly dogs on both our Wednesday and Thursday trips. We wish to thank the Moore's for sharing their beautiful island with our group. Please visit our website to view our upcoming summer programs at www.marionmuseum.org. Photo courtesy Eliza

Marion Natural History Museum172 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's Wednesday morning community group wishes to thank Entomologist Blake Dinius for his excellent presentation on how one species can affect so many others in our ecosystem. The smallest, most insignificant-looking insect may play a big role in whether or not a species of tree or flower survives. Blake gave us some ideas on what measures we can take to both preserve a lawn for family activities and allow other areas to remain wild for insects and wildlife. Attendees had an op
