Marion Natural History Museum241 viewsOn November 29, the Marion Natural History Museum community group had fun crafting a distinctive butterfly mobile for the museum, drawing inspiration from the detailed illustrations of Maria Sibylla Merian. In this workshop, the participants combined historical accuracy with modern design to produce a captivating display that will hang above our antique butterfly case. Marion Village Christmas Stroll241 viewsDespite eventual rain, the Marion Village Christmas Stroll was enjoyed by many on Sunday afternoon. The event included musical entertainment by Tri-County musicians, Grades 4 and 5 bands from Sippican Elementary School, Sippican Historical Society carolers and Tabor Academy students, horse-drawn carriage rides, street entertainment, seasonal refreshments courtesy of area merchants, goodie bags from VASE, and crafts for kids. Annawon Weeden241 viewsActor and activist Annawon Weeden spoke to a full house at the Marion Congregational Church on May 11. Sponsored by the Marion Art Center, Weeden spoke on all matters indigenous from languages to the creation story shared by many nations. Weeden also noted the use of wampum (created from quahog shells) to make jewelry and as a form of monetary exchange. Marion Natural History Museum241 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum’s afterschool group had a terrific time constructing their own rockets for launching. This program was so popular it had to be offered twice! The kids had a hands-on introduction to the engineering principles of propulsion and lift. Every rocket managed a successful launch hundreds of feet in the air, and most were safely carried down by the parachutes. Marion Natural History Museum241 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum wishes to thank board member and President of the Nasketucket Bird Club Justin Barrett for his presentation on the birds of Panama. The birds were beautifully colored and with beaks well designed for eating fruit, their primary food source. Along with the magnificent bird specimens we also saw several monkeys and other exotic animals from Justin’s trip. The museum wishes to thank Justin for sharing his amazing birding adventure with us on a dark and dreary winter morning.

We learned about what’s needed for lift-off and propulsion, as well as how to add the “recovery wadding” and parachute to ensure the rocket doesn’t get damaged. Marion Natural History Museum240 viewsOn October 20, the Marion Natural History Museum’s after-school group spent time learning a little about our migrating bird populations. We found out that the Arctic tern migrates 50,000 miles, which is the longest distance of any bird. The ruby-throated hummingbird can migrate as far as Mexico and Central America in search of flowers and insects. We then went on a bird walk and managed to find a mourning dove, blue jay, European starling, black-capped chickadee, and belted kingfisher, among other birds.
