We took a look at Green frog tadpoles, Wood frog and salamander egg masses. We also looked at some of our aquatic invertebrates, such as Water boatman, Caddisfly larvae and others that help by breaking down the leaves at the bottom of the pool and starting the forest food chain. Marion Natural History Museum213 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum’s afterschool group had a terrific time constructing their own rockets for launching. This program was so popular it had to be offered twice! The kids had a hands-on introduction to the engineering principles of propulsion and lift. Every rocket managed a successful launch hundreds of feet in the air, and most were safely carried down by the parachutes. Marion Natural History Museum213 viewsMany thanks to soil scientist Maggie Payne for her fun and fascinating program about composting with worms. We had a close up look at Red Wiggler worms and they definitely lived up to their name by jumping about during the program. We had a chance to inspect them using magnifying glasses and microscopes trying to determine which end was which. We then created a habitat for them with shredded paper and leftover vegetables. Each student had a chance to bring their worm farm home.

This year’s highlighted artist is the late Willoughby Elliott, whose landscapes and still lives were the inspiration for many exciting and uniquely realized floral arrangements. Pumpkin Palooza212 viewsSaturday’s Pumpkin Palooza hosted by the Marion Council of Aging and the Recreation Department at the Cushing Community Center. Families decorated pumpkins, and children enjoyed face painting, a hula-hoop contest, dancing, a visit from Pine Meadow Farm animals and refreshments supported by Tabor Academy volunteers. Pumpkins were later illuminated, giving the pavilion an eerie weekend presence. Sixty-five families preregistered to participate in the event inspired by Marion citizen Dianne Cosman

Bird Island212 viewsMany thanks to Marion Harbormaster Isaac Perry and the whole harbormaster crew for giving us the experience of a lifetime exploring the nesting habitats of the Common and Roseate Terns when they're in our area. Bird Island has had an extensive amount of work done to promote successful nesting habitat for these species, and it looks like it has paid off. Summer Reading Program212 viewsAs a kickoff to the summer reading program at the Elizabeth Taber Library and summer Natural History Museum programming, the Town of Marion was treated to a visit from a full-size whale, two very large dinosaurs and one baby dino named Spike. The Summer Block Party event held on June 24 started inside the Music Hall due to weather but later moved outside. The event also featured faux archeology digs and face painting.
