The museum wishes to thank Derek Perry, Invertebrate Fisheries biologist from Massachusetts Department of Marine Fisheries, for sharing his expertise with us. Although there are many hurdles to overcome for these amazing animals, there is reason for hope, given some of the fieldwork results provided by the many volunteers who monitor our beaches. Marion Natural History Museum189 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum hosted a program last Friday on the Ocean Twilight Zone with Dr. Benjamin Grassian of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). Dr. Grassian is researching Diel Vertical Migration, or the daily vertical migration of animals in the mesopelagic zone of the ocean in response to light and predation. Festival of Trees 188 viewsThe Festival of Trees opened on November 27 with a reception at the Cushing Community Center on Route 6 in Marion. Sponsored by the Friends of Marion Council on Aging, the event showcased 14 decorated Christmas trees, along with an artisan sale, music, refreshments and a raffle for over 10 gift baskets. Spruce Tree188 viewsAmidst wet snow that tailed off into a cold Tuesday morning, the large spruce tree situated between the Elizabeth Taber Library and Sippican Elementary School was taken down after it was found to be a safety hazard. The tree is believed to have sustained a recent lightning strike, and large sections of the tree showed major rot. Some of the wood will be used to add to the memorial to four Sippican students honored at the site since 2009, and the bottom 3 feet of the trunk was preserved.
