Soapbox Derby194 viewsMarion and Rochester Cub Scouts came together on November 6 for a soapbox derby on Holmes Street in Marion. The longtime fundraising event was not held in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic but made a roaring return on Saturday, as children raced their homemade go-carts and collected donations for the Murphy and Others, Living Interdependently for Future Endeavors, Inc. Marion Village Stroll194 viewsCars lined several Marion streets as residents gathered for the town’s Christmas Stroll on December 12. Front Street and connecting village roads were partially closed for the event, as families enjoyed refreshments provided by area merchants at their doorsteps and along the roads. Clydesdale horses escorted Santa Claus and passengers, while the Sippican Elementary School Band played, Tabor Academy student singer Wesley Lai of Hong Kong sang, and a bike rider juggled bowling pins. Marion Art Center 194 viewsOn June 23, the Marion Art Center held its annual Art in Bloom reception. The popular event pairs floral arrangements with paintings in what can to liken to a 3D visual art profusion. This year's art featured the abstract expressions of Pat Warwick, Alyn Carlson and Pat Coomey Thornton. Pumpkin Palooza194 viewsSaturday’s Pumpkin Palooza hosted by the Marion Council of Aging and the Recreation Department at the Cushing Community Center. Families decorated pumpkins, and children enjoyed face painting, a hula-hoop contest, dancing, a visit from Pine Meadow Farm animals and refreshments supported by Tabor Academy volunteers. Pumpkins were later illuminated, giving the pavilion an eerie weekend presence. Sixty-five families preregistered to participate in the event inspired by Marion citizen Dianne Cosman

Marion Natural History Museum194 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum recently held a workshop on the many apps available to help people identify birds in the field. Justin Barrett, Nasketucket Bird Club president and museum board member, went over how best to use apps from Audubon, Cornell, Sibley and many others. We also learned how to record a bird or birds and have each one identified by call simultaneously. Marion Natural History Museum194 viewsFriday night the Marion Natural History Museum hosted a standing-room-only presentation about the Black Bear population in Massachusetts. According to state fish and wildlife biologists Jason Zimmer and Steven Wright, the population is rapidly expanding into the eastern part of our state. Jason gave us some good tips to keep black bears out of our property, including removing bird feeders, covering and keeping our garbage contained, and how to keep bears out of our livestock.
