Marion Natural History Museum360 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's Coastal Exploration group had a wonderful time last week exploring Marion's shoreline, inland wetlands and woodland areas. We collected examples of plankton, caught fish and frogs in our nets, investigated tide pools and took trips to Bird and Ram Island. The museum would like to thank Hannah Moore and David Wilson and Andrew Miller of the Marion Harbormaster Department for their help in making it such a special week. Marion Natural History Museum360 viewsOn February 28, the Marion Natural History Museum's after school group enjoyed hearing about the efforts being made to protect the endangered Diamondback terrapin. Debra Ewing showed photos of the "Terrapin Garden" she helped to create in her neighborhood in Marion. The students had many interesting questions about this species, which were answered by Debra and two volunteers from New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance (NECWA). Marion Natural History Museum360 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum’s after-school group had fun with hands-on inspections of some of our local amphibian species. We took a look at Green frog tadpoles, Wood frog and salamander egg masses. We also looked at some of our aquatic invertebrates, such as Water boatman, Caddisfly larvae and others that help by breaking down the leaves at the bottom of the pool and starting the forest food chain. Dr. Michael Moore, Right Whale biologist with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, gave us the most recent data collected about this species. He also discussed what measures might be taken to improve Right Whale survival, despite heavy boat traffic along the North Atlantic coastline. Thank you to Dr. Moore for speaking to the group. Marion Natural History Museum360 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum wishes to thank Justin Barrett for his excellent program on learning how to bird watch. The kids had a lesson on using binoculars and had a chance to practice outside. Although it was getting dark, we saw a Junco, several sparrows, and took a close up look at squirrel nest. Thank you, Justin. Photo courtesy Elizabeth Leidhold.

Marion Natural History Museum360 viewsAfter learning how to build a snake hibernaculum, a beaver lodge, and a bear den, the group tried their hand at creating miniatures for museum display. The beaver lodge was tested to see if it held water back and still kept the lodge dry inside. It was a huge success! Feel free to come in to view any of these creations during the museum’s open hours. Photo courtesy Elizabeth Leidhold.
