Coastal Sweep273 viewsLed by Marion resident Peter McDonald, environmentally-minded locals and Tabor students descended upon Marion’s Silvershell Beach and Planting Island, Mattapoisett Town Beach and Wareham’s Onset Beach to pick up trash and debris on the morning of September 17, 2011. The residents cleaned the beaches in solidarity with 400,000 individuals in 120 countries, all who participated in a global beach cleanup orchestrated by the Ocean Conservancy. Sippican Schooner 5k and Mini Fun Run 273 views Sunday, May 4 was a perfect day for a fun run through Marion, and about 200 people turned out to participate in VASE’s second annual Sippican Schooner 5k and Mini Fun Run to raise money for educational programs at Sippican Elementary School. Marion Fire Department273 viewsThe Marion Fire Department celebrated the careers of three of its retiring firefighters on November 8. Deputy Chiefs William Scott, Charles Blanchette, and Scott Cowell were toasted (and roasted) by Marion Fire Chief Thomas Joyce before family and friends at the Marion VFW Saturday night. The wives of MacDougal and Blanchette, and the daughter of Cowell, attached new deputy chief badges on the three gentlemen during the pinning ceremony, and the three selectmen honored the retiring chiefs with gifts.

During the program the students had a chance to view videos of hatchling turtles, learn a little about sea turtle biology, and handle some live terrapins. Many thanks to soil scientist Maggie Payne of the USDA's Natural Resource and Conservation Service. We learned what makes a "good" soil and why that's important to everyone, from farming to building a house.
