Tabor Academy Polar Plunge372 viewsTabor Academy hosted its second annual Polar Plunge on Sunday, January 21 at Silvershell Beach to raise money for the school’s Special Olympics Young Athletes Program. Students from ‘fundraising rival’ Sandwich High also showed up, with scores of students and staff making a dash in and quickly out of the chilly waters. The plunge raised about $8,000. Marion Natural History Museum372 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's after school group had a great time learning the difference between wild animal tracks, including coyote, raccoon, and bobcat. We also enjoyed practicing how to move like various animals by waddling, walking, bounding, and hopping. Bounding like a fisher cat and hopping like a snow shoe hare were by far the most difficult gaits to practice due to the placement of the rear feet versus the front. Marion Natural History Museum372 viewsOn November 28, the Marion Natural History Museum's afterschool group hosted Manny da Costa, a watershed scientist from Inter-fluve. Da Costa discussed some river restoration projects and taught about the importance of rivers for fish passage and water quality for our watershed. Student groups worked on problems involving hydrology, fish passage, riparian (rivers), and shellfish, and came up with some great ideas for protecting our watershed.

Marion Fire Department 372 viewsSunday was a solemn day for the Tri-Town and its first responders as many gathered to honor Thomas Nye, 72, a 45-year veteran of the Marion Fire Department who died February 27 in the line of duty. Over 100 firefighters, police officers, and EMS personnel from the Tri-Town and beyond marched together down Route 6 in Mattapoisett on March 3 to pay their respects to their fallen comrade who suffered a cardiac arrest at home after assisting in a fire call the night before.
