Marion Natural History Museum466 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum after school group had a wonderful time exploring what works (and what doesn't) when constructing a wooden sailboat. The students constructed their own boat, either a single hull or catamaran, and added a sail and keel. After decorating their vessels, students raced the boats down two long rain gutters filled with water. Many thanks to engineer Mark Whalen for yet another terrific program! Students compared red cedar bark to red pine, took a close look at various lichens and mosses that use tree bark as a surface to grow on, and counted rings in a log supplied by Hartley Saw Mill in Rochester.

Marion Natural History Museum466 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum wishes to thank Blake Dinius, entomologist with the Plymouth County Extension Service, for sharing his knowledge of our backyard bugs. Did you know that the cecropia moth is Massachusetts’ largest insect? And that it has a wingspan of up to 6 inches? Blake also brought in a live praying mantis and many specimens of moths and winged insects under glass to take a close up look at with magnifiers. The museum also wishes to thank all the volunteers who helped with the program

Marion Natural History Museum466 viewsOn Friday night, the Marion Natural History Museum hosted Dr. Michael Moore of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute for his presentation, “North Atlantic Right Whales,” an inside story on the plight of the population of right whales. He spoke about whale entanglement and described the damage conventional lobster fishing equipment does to a whale's anatomy. He also gave us some hope for the future, as more recently developed technologies are adopted to prevent entanglements from stationary lobster gear sus
