Marion Natural History Museum516 viewsSeveral students took advantage of the Marion Natural History Museum's new virtual reality set over the February vacation. Student Jacob Nye spent some time on a virtual tour of the Amazon Rain Forest, tried walking in space, and enjoyed visiting with animals under the sea. The virtual reality is available for children and adults to use by appointment only. Museum member families receive five free virtual tour visits, $5 per visit for non-members.

Marion Natural History Museum516 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum wishes to thank Blake Dinius, entomologist with the Plymouth County Extension Service, for sharing his knowledge of our backyard bugs. Did you know that the cecropia moth is Massachusetts’ largest insect? And that it has a wingspan of up to 6 inches? Blake also brought in a live praying mantis and many specimens of moths and winged insects under glass to take a close up look at with magnifiers. The museum also wishes to thank all the volunteers who helped with the program

Marion Natural History Museum516 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum Explored Group led by the staff from MattRec had a great week exploring Mattapoisett's open spaces. Along with crabbing, netting fish, building cairns, discovering types of seaweeds and saltmarsh vegetation, and plenty of swimming, we also met Coast Guard Fairhaven and Marion Flotilla members for a tour of Ned's Point lighthouse. We learned about oyster farming with Bob Field and enjoyed a boat tour of Mattapoisett Harbor with the Harbormaster's Office.

Marion Holiday Stroll516 viewsThe Marion village streets were filled with holiday revelers on Sunday, December 9, for the annual Marion Holiday Stroll. Santa’s boat docked at the Marion Wharf where the faces of hundreds of children lit up at his arrival. Santa boarded a horse-drawn carriage and paraded through the streets, passing businesses offering free goodies and dodging the whereabouts of that old Grinch who didn’t seem to mind Christmas coming at all this year. Evening on Sippican Harbor516 views(L-R) Marion party planners Joan Asker, MaryAnn Hayes, & Jori Borden set the stage for an "Evening on Sippican Harbor" to be held on August 7 from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm. The evening will be a celebration of Marion's COA and launch the next phase of fundraising by the Friends of the COA for the build-out of floor-to-ceiling walls for existing office space, creating the necessary privacy for townspeople to take advantage of the growing number of services being offered at the Center.

Sippican Lands Trust 516 viewsJim Bride, Sippican Lands Trust executive director, and contractor W.S. Bradford welcomed the public to a groundbreaking ceremony for an 1,800-foot universally accessible wheelchair boardwalk on June 29 at the SLT’s Osprey Marsh property on Point Road in Marion. SLT board members, contributors, and a few community members were in attendance. They hope to have the 1,800 ft. all accessible/wheelchair boardwalk completed in six months. This boardwalk will be the first of its kind in the Southcoast region.
