Waterway Clean-up169 viewsKyle Kossak caused some concern when he was spotted in his kayak in Hiller Cove off Aucoot Road, but it turns out the mechanical engineer from Newport, Rhode Island, was not shell fishing, he was cleaning up trash along Mattapoisett’s shoreline. For several years now, Kossak has made a weekly hobby of picking out spots along the southern New England shoreline, taking his kayak out to selected sites and retrieving trash. Pumpkin Palooza169 viewsSaturday’s Pumpkin Palooza hosted by the Marion Council of Aging and the Recreation Department at the Cushing Community Center. Families decorated pumpkins, and children enjoyed face painting, a hula-hoop contest, dancing, a visit from Pine Meadow Farm animals and refreshments supported by Tabor Academy volunteers. Pumpkins were later illuminated, giving the pavilion an eerie weekend presence. Sixty-five families preregistered to participate in the event inspired by Marion citizen Dianne Cosman

Sunday Squash169 viewsChildren and adults enjoyed playing squash on Sunday at Tabor Academy, thanks to a clinic put on by the Seawolves’ squash coach Guillermo Moronta. Without access to the sport anywhere between Boston and Providence besides prep schools, Moronta is hoping clinics like last weekend’s will “grow the game” and eventually generate the interest to support a middle-school program in the area. Center School Art169 viewsChildren of all ages with their parents, guardians and grandparents filled Center School on March 23 to view artwork by Mattapoisett students ranging from Project GROW (preschool) to Grade 6. Greta Anderson is the Art teacher for both Mattapoisett schools and worked with a group of Mattapoisett PTA volunteers to mount and hang over 450 art pieces. "It's great to see so many families here!" she said. Principal Linda Ashley greeted visitors, walking some to their students' work.
