Marion Natural History Museum188 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's Coastal Exploration group had a wonderful time last week exploring Marion's shoreline, inland wetlands and woodland areas. We collected examples of plankton, caught fish and frogs in our nets, investigated tide pools and took trips to Bird and Ram Island. Mattapoisett Town Band Director188 viewsOn August 25, Mattapoisett Town Band Director Jim Farmer introduced the new band director, Jayson Newell. Farmer retired after more than 30 years as the Town Band leader. Newell, who has more than 25 years playing and teaching in south-coast bands and in schools, is a teacher at Durfee High School in Fall River. Principal Marla Sirois is with parent Anna Ward and Grade 6 student Ollie Ward. Volunteers at Sippican Elementary (VASE) members present included president Johanna Vergoni, vice president Barbara Moody and Kerry Milhench of the Sixth Grade parent group.

Halloween Parade188 viewsThe streets of Marion were flooded with Halloween Parade participants and attendees, as members of the Sippican Elementary School Band helped the “witches” of the Marion Art Center lead a procession that began at the Music Hall and went down Front Street, up Main Street past the Elizabeth Taber statue and onto Spring Street, where children were met at Town House by staff members handing out candy for the kids. Howard Tinkham188 viewsHoward Tinkham’s 100th birthday was celebrated on Sunday with a parade that went from the Florence Eastman Post 280 American Legion in Mattapoisett out to Ned’s Point Lighthouse and back, followed by a party at the hall featuring “God Bless America” and “Happy Birthday” sung by the Showstoppers and refreshments for the many citizens who attended to express their appreciation for all that Tinkham has meant to the town. The sightings included a large “raft” of sleepy Greater Scaup, Canada Geese, American Black Duck, Surf Scoter, Long-tailed Duck, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, Hooded Merganser, Red-breasted Merganser, Horned Grebe, Ring-billed Gull, Herring Gull, Common Loon, American Crow, American Robin, House Finch, Song Sparrow and Northern Cardinal.
