Marion Natural History Museum181 viewsOn July 16, the Marion Natural History Museum's community group had a chance to explore some of our local butterfly species. We found a Clouded Sulphur, Eastern tailed blue, Monarchs, Little Wood Satyrs, Common Wood Nymphs, and two Pearl Crescents. We also learned to identify some of their host plants including Butterfly Weed, Milkweed, Sweet Pepperbush and Mountain Mint. Mattapoisett Boatyard Fire180 viewsSmoke rose over Mattapoisett Harbor on August 19 after a boat caught fire during the replacement of a gasoline tank. An explosion followed by a raging fire leveled Mattapoisett Boatyard and destroyed the 14 boats and 47 vehicles on site. Members of the Kaiser family who own the business and members of the McLean family who founded the business surveyed the ruins on the weekend and vow to rebuild. Oil Spill Drill180 viewsOn Tuesday, the Town of Mattapoisett hosted a MassDEP-sponsored training course in cooperation with the Town of Fairhaven, representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard, Nuka Research and Planning Group and Moran Environmental Recovery. Working the Mattapoisett Harbormaster boat piloted by P.J. Beaudoin were Assistant Harbormaster Robert Clavin and intern Robert Haskell, and on the Mattapoisett Fire Department boat were Firefighter Daniel Cortes and Lieutenant Ross Macedo. Shining Tides Multiuse Pathway180 viewsThe official opening of the Shining Tides multiuse pathway took place on June 12 with approximately 75 people gathered to applaud the 20-year effort. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation hosted the ribbon-cutting event where the elevated bridge span crosses the Mattapoisett River and Eel Pond marshlands. Representative William Straus noted the hard work of both local volunteers and government members, as well as the support and work done by those associated with Secretary of Transportation

Monday Morning Painters180 viewsThe Monday Morning Painters are a group of dedicated artists who for more than 10 years have supported one another in their painting journeys. The group meets at the Rochester Council on Aging and welcomes like-minded artists to join them. Unique to this group, their painting is not under the direction of a leader, each artist works at their own pace.
