Courageous 8260 viewsOn August 6, Jeep owners and supporters of the local Relay for Life team, the Courageous 8 founded by survivor Laurie Nunes, gathered for the annual Jeeps and Peeps Rally at Ned's Point. Manning the information table were long-time team members Nancy Souza and Wendy Medeiros. The rally brought together Jeep owners and relay supporters from Rhode Island, Texas and North Carolina. Oil Spill Drill260 viewsOn Tuesday, the Town of Mattapoisett hosted a MassDEP-sponsored training course in cooperation with the Town of Fairhaven, representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard, Nuka Research and Planning Group and Moran Environmental Recovery. Working the Mattapoisett Harbormaster boat piloted by P.J. Beaudoin were Assistant Harbormaster Robert Clavin and intern Robert Haskell, and on the Mattapoisett Fire Department boat were Firefighter Daniel Cortes and Lieutenant Ross Macedo. Rockets260 viewsMattapoisett Library hosted Dr. Sandra Pearl of SEED Education on September 21. SEED is a regional, nonprofit organization run by Ph.D. scientists with a passion for empowering teachers with the confidence to instill a love of science in their students. Pearl led a group of eager students through science experiments geared to launching things into the air. There was age-appropriate physics, chemistry and just plain fun. The activity was made possible through a grant from the Mattapoisett Cultural Council.

Arbor Day260 viewsMattapoisett's Tree Committee held its annual Arbor Day poster contest in partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation on March 2. Forty-three Old Hammondtown fifth-grade students participated in this year's contest. The winner will have their poster with the theme "It’s time for trees" entered into the state-wide competition. The poster contest is an ongoing effort by the Tree Committee to enlighten children regarding the importance of trees in our landscapes.
