Arbor Day236 viewsMattapoisett's Tree Committee held its annual Arbor Day poster contest in partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation on March 2. Forty-three Old Hammondtown fifth-grade students participated in this year's contest. The winner will have their poster with the theme "It’s time for trees" entered into the state-wide competition. The poster contest is an ongoing effort by the Tree Committee to enlighten children regarding the importance of trees in our landscapes.

236 viewsOn view now as an outdoor art installation are two works created by UMass visual art students located at Dunseith, the Mattapoisett Land Trust park property at the corner of Route 6 and North Street. Both works are interactive in that The Bean has moveable parts that give viewers of all ages the opportunity to leave their own impact on tiny sculptures by relocating them across the surface of the sculpture. The Catalyst is bed-like, beckoning viewers to set aside cares and rest for a moment.

Tornado in Mattapoisett236 viewsAn EF-1 tornado touched down late Tuesday morning in Mattapoisett. The unusual weather event downed power lines and hundreds of trees, knocking out power to many homes north of Route 195. Television news crews descended from Boston, as the Mattapoisett Fire and Police departments worked with utility companies and many power lines to clean up roads and assist area residents coming home to frightening scenes. Mattapoisett’s Fire Department236 viewsMattapoisett’s Fire Department opened its doors to the community on October 12 with a grand party filled with family, friends and pizza. The event was an opportunity for the department to highlight fire prevention while tiny tots donned helmets and rang the bell on an antique fire engine. “It’s a great success,” said Chief Andrew Murray of the event that hosted several hundred people of all ages. New Fire Engine Number 3 was on display having just a day before been added to the fleet.
