Bright blue skies graced the heavens while here on earth, children cavorted across Shipyard Park with seasonal tunes playing in the background like “Purple People Eater”.

Polar Plunge231 viewsOn New Years Day, hundreds were arrayed at Mattapoisett Town Beach for this year’s Mattapoisett Polar Plunge. Since 2013, the beach has seen residents and visitors run into the freezing Atlantic to kick off the new year. The event is held by Keep On Plungin’ who, through the selling of baked goods, coffee, and hot chocolate, donate all proceeds of the fridged plunge to local families grappling with the costs of cancer treatment. Howard C. Tinkham230 viewsHoward C. Tinkham and his daughter Cheryl Baum enjoyed the band concert at Shipyard Park on July 27. Tinkham is recognized by the community's Historical Commission as a Farmer-Friend-Educator with a commemorative brick placed at the site of the former Tripp Mill at Tinkham Pond on Acushnet Road. The Tripp Mill was owned by the Tinkham family for generations and noted as a historical location with an informative plaque. Tinkham is 99-years old and plans to celebrate his next birthday.

With the help of the students, the town has been able to fund the materials needed without the associated labor. Arbor Day230 viewsMattapoisett's Tree Committee held its annual Arbor Day poster contest in partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation on March 2. Forty-three Old Hammondtown fifth-grade students participated in this year's contest. The winner will have their poster with the theme "It’s time for trees" entered into the state-wide competition. The poster contest is an ongoing effort by the Tree Committee to enlighten children regarding the importance of trees in our landscapes.

Tornado in Mattapoisett230 viewsAn EF-1 tornado touched down late Tuesday morning in Mattapoisett. The unusual weather event downed power lines and hundreds of trees, knocking out power to many homes north of Route 195. Television news crews descended from Boston, as the Mattapoisett Fire and Police departments worked with utility companies and many power lines to clean up roads and assist area residents coming home to frightening scenes.
