New Year Plunge339 viewsIt was not publicized or heavily promoted, but traditions are hard to break. That was the case on New Year’s Day 2022 when a hearty group of some 200 “plungers” arrived at Mattapoisett Town Beach for their annual dip in the harbor. Last year the event was not publicized at all, said this year’s organizers, Heather and Michael Bichsel. “But we decided since people were going to show up anyway, we’d help to keep this going.”

Tornado in Mattapoisett339 viewsAn EF-1 tornado touched down late Tuesday morning in Mattapoisett. The unusual weather event downed power lines and hundreds of trees, knocking out power to many homes north of Route 195. Television news crews descended from Boston, as the Mattapoisett Fire and Police departments worked with utility companies and many power lines to clean up roads and assist area residents coming home to frightening scenes. Keep on Plungin’ 339 viewsThe annual Keep on Plungin’ New Year’s Day swim drew well over 100 participants to Mattapoisett Town Beach, continuing a tradition started in 2013 by Will and Michelle Huggins to help families facing expenses related to cancer care. In the last two years, the community-driven effort has benefitted three families and Dana Farber with a $1,000 donation in Huggins’ honor. This year, organizers anticipate supporting at least two more families with checks for $2,000. Photos by Mick Colageo

Melody Pacheco338 viewsOn March 17 family, friends, and co-workers came out in force to beep and wave at retiring Mattapoisett Town Hall employee Melody Pacheco, who ended her 35-year career after serving in a variety of capacities, including assistant to the town administrator, for over a decade. While Pacheco looked on from the steps of Town Hall, all in attendance wished her a very happy retirement with cheers of “Thank You” and tears of gratitude. Photos by Mick Colageo
