Memorial Day 2014368 viewsScores of Mattapoisett residents gathered in front of the Mattapoisett Free Library the drizzly afternoon of May 26 to pay homage to veteran Americans who lost their lives. Onlookers filled the lawn and spilled out into the street to watch the Memorial Day ceremony with special guest speaker Navy Reserve Commander Paul J. Shaw Farm Trail368 viewsJuly 31 was a big day for the Buzzards Bay Coalition, the Towns of Fairhaven and Mattapoisett, and the entire South Coast when 416 acres of farmland and conservation land were added to the Nasketucket Bay Conservation Project, which was formally completed with the addition of the Shaw Farm Trail that now links the bike path with the Nasketucket Bay State Reservation. 4th of July368 viewsMattapoisett Boatyard set up its 40-foot mooring barge with a 50-foot crane to display a 30 foot by 50 foot American flag in the middle of Mattapoisett harbor. The flag was supplied by Richard DeMello, who owns Bete-Fleming Inc. in Mattapoisett and was reportedly thrilled to see the flag on display. Ned Kaiser of Mattapoisett Boatyard conjured up the idea a few days prior, thinking this would be a great way to give back and display the United States flag boldly and with pride. RBG368 viewsRegina McIntyre of Angelica Avenue in Mattapoisett erected a small but poignant memorial outside her home to honor Ruth Bader Ginsburg following the Supreme Court Justice’s passing. “I couldn’t travel to Washington, so I decided to place this memorial here to remember her work on behalf of both women and men,” adding: “She was such an example, (a) role model.” It was a family affair as McIntyre’s sister dressed the Ginsburg doll in a hand-sewn robe complete with seed pearl collar and red shoes.

Anthony DeCosta 368 viewsAnthony DeCosta was well known in Mattapoisett as a painter and the co-author of a book about the first Portuguese residents in the town. Born in 1892, he was a lifelong resident, except for the years he drove an ambulance during World War I. In his later years, he painted pictures of Mattapoisett, including the Ned’s Point Lighthouse, the whaling ship The Wanderer, and of New Bedford’s streets during the whaling years. DeCosta’s granddaughter, Lorene Sweeney remembers,

Mattapoisett Bike Path368 viewsPlanking for the bike path is under test review, and the installation of railings along the elevated sections of railings can be seen from the Reservation Road portion of Phase 1b of the Mattapoisett Bike Path. Town Administrator Mike Lorenco said that although a different type of planking material is being tested, the town will not accept the project for ownership until MassDOT enters into a joint-ownership agreement and/or provides bonding assurances in the event of material failure as previous experience
