Anthony DeCosta 347 viewsAnthony DeCosta was well known in Mattapoisett as a painter and the co-author of a book about the first Portuguese residents in the town. Born in 1892, he was a lifelong resident, except for the years he drove an ambulance during World War I. In his later years, he painted pictures of Mattapoisett, including the Ned’s Point Lighthouse, the whaling ship The Wanderer, and of New Bedford’s streets during the whaling years. The landscape is bathed in golden sunlight that makes the bogs appear to glow from the inside out. The Buzzards Bay Coalition oversees the 50 acres of retired cranberry bogs that abounds with wildlife of the amphibious kind. Mattapoisett Historical Museum Photos346 viewsThe Mattapoisett Historical Museum is in possession of hundreds of photographs dating from the 1800s to as recently as the 1980s bearing images of people and places from Mattapoisett, but lacking identification. In their latest exhibit, the museum is asking the public to help solve the mystery each of the pictures represents. Each black and white or colorized image is a mini-mystery waiting to be solved.
