Flag Day347 viewsCenter School students gathered together with Old Hammondtown students by the Center School flagpole on the morning of Tuesday, June 14, to celebrate Flag Day. The OHS band played a number of tunes, while the Center School students sang patriotic songs and listened to Principal Rose Bowman read a series of poems and writings to remind the children of what the American flag stands for. At Silvershell Beach in Marion, the Marion Recreation Department provided an array of food, fun, and games for beachgoers, and in Mattapoisett, kids enjoyed face painting, sack races, and, of course, plenty of sun. Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Plunge347 viewsIt takes a certain type of person to jump into the cold ocean on New Year’s morning. Behold, the locals who fit that description as they enjoy a frosty January 1st at Mattapoisett Town Beach for the annual Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Plunge! Hundreds lined the beach to take the plunge, with bundled spectators watching from the sidelines and cheering as the plungers charged ahead screaming and shrieking with exhilaration. Following events are Wednesday with Concert in the Park and strawberry shortcake, Thursday is Paint Night at Shipyard Park, Friday is the fish fry, Saturday is craft fair/vendors, entertainment, U-Pick ‘Em Auction, and lobster dinner, and Sunday is the pancake breakfast. Ikebana347 viewsMattapoisett resident Ellen Flynn gave an Ikebana flower arranging demonstration at the public library on May 5. This type of flower arranging began in 7th century Japan, and Flynn has studied the art form for over 15 years.
