Mattapoisett Memorial Day489 viewsThe rainy weather kept the Monday Memorial Day observances inside in Marion and Mattapoisett and, although the parades were both canceled, plenty of residents turned out to remember the brave souls we lost in war and honor their memories. Flag Day489 viewsCenter School students gathered together with Old Hammondtown students by the Center School flagpole on the morning of Tuesday, June 14, to celebrate Flag Day. The OHS band played a number of tunes, while the Center School students sang patriotic songs and listened to Principal Rose Bowman read a series of poems and writings to remind the children of what the American flag stands for. Opening Day489 viewsResidents of Marion and Mattapoisett celebrated the grand opening of their beloved town beaches on Saturday, June 25. At Silvershell Beach in Marion, the Marion Recreation Department provided an array of food, fun, and games for beachgoers, and in Mattapoisett, kids enjoyed face painting, sack races, and, of course, plenty of sun. Harbor Days 489 viewsHarbor Days came to Mattapoisett this past weekend, and many visitors were gracious enough to spin The Wanderer Wheel for a $1 donation to the Lions Club. Those who played helped raise an extra $523 the Lions Club will use to benefit the community. The Aardvark came out too, but since furry aardvarks hate hot weather, he only made a couple of appearances. Photos by Jean Perry

Mattapoisett Firefighters Association Chowder Competition489 viewsThe 2nd Annual Mattapoisett Firefighters Association Chowder Competition was well attended this Sunday, September 18, behind the Knights of Columbus on Route 6. Two categories – professional establishment and public safety – competed for best judged chowder and people’s choice. The Rochester Facilities Department took first place, with the Rochester Firefighter’s Association taking second and the People’s Choice award. Photos by Jean Perry

Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Plunge489 viewsIt takes a certain type of person to jump into the cold ocean on New Year’s morning. Behold, the locals who fit that description as they enjoy a frosty January 1st at Mattapoisett Town Beach for the annual Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Plunge! Hundreds lined the beach to take the plunge, with bundled spectators watching from the sidelines and cheering as the plungers charged ahead screaming and shrieking with exhilaration. Lieutenant Justin Dubois and firefighters Justin Blue, Silas Costa, and Bill Oliver climbed 2,880steps in one hour in full firefighter gear (up to 100 lbs) to raise money for Homes For Our Troops, a nonprofit that builds adaptive homes for injured veterans. Following events are Wednesday with Concert in the Park and strawberry shortcake, Thursday is Paint Night at Shipyard Park, Friday is the fish fry, Saturday is craft fair/vendors, entertainment, U-Pick ‘Em Auction, and lobster dinner, and Sunday is the pancake breakfast.
