Chris Kidd attended the Memorial Day observances at Center School on May 28. The Old Hammondtown School concert band under the direction of Cara Kinney played patriotic tunes to a full house, and afterwards the Memorial Day parade headed to the Civil War monument at the library. Mattapoisett Woman’s Club Garden Tour429 viewsThe Mattapoisett Woman’s Club Garden Tour “Nature’s Treasures” held on June 30 was “Magnificent”, declared Ellen Flynn. Flynn said that the event brought in more than $6,000 - monies that are earmarked for their scholarship fund. She said visitors were awed by the gardens graciously opened for viewing from iconic harbor homes to those set in peaceful rural uplands along the Mattapoisett River Valley. Lions Club Triathlon429 viewsUnder merciful overcast skies on July 15, the 37th annual Lions Club Triathlon found 115 participants including seven relay teams vying for first place bragging rights. Coming in 1st place in the men’s division was Brian Hughes with a time of 51:38 minutes. Anders Broussard was the top-performing woman at 57:52 minutes, and the Union Running relay team clocked in at 57:52. Photos by Marilou Newell

Gaga Pit at Center School429 viewsPaul McLaughlin of Mattapoisett Troop 53 has completed his Eagle Scout Project – a Gaga Pit at Center School. McLaughlin, a freshman at Old Colony, wanted to build the Gaga pit where everyone could access to enjoy a game of Gaga ball. The game is played inside the octagon pit with a soft ball. The ball is hit with the hand at opponents within the Gaga pit below the knees to get them ‘out’. The full set of rules can be found on a plaque hung within the pit, which is there for all to enjoy

Mother’s Day Tiara 5k429 viewsSunday’s wind and rain wasn’t stopping the hundreds who participated in the annual Mother’s Day Tiara 5k in Mattapoisett on May 10. The storm brought strong wind and cold rain to the area, especially at the turn around Ned’s Point Lighthouse, dampening the day but not the sentiment behind the Women’s Fund of Southeastern Massachusetts’ largest annual fundraising event. Keep on Plungin’ 429 viewsThe annual Keep on Plungin’ New Year’s Day swim drew well over 100 participants to Mattapoisett Town Beach, continuing a tradition started in 2013 by Will and Michelle Huggins to help families facing expenses related to cancer care. In the last two years, the community-driven effort has benefitted three families and Dana Farber with a $1,000 donation in Huggins’ honor. This year, organizers anticipate supporting at least two more families with checks for $2,000. Photos by Mick Colageo
