Annual Christmas Fair521 views The Church of St. Anthony of Padua in Mattapoisett held its annual Christmas fair on Saturday, November 30. The sale featured an array of hand-made artisan goods from custom Christmas tree ornaments to fine baked goods. The presentation was a riveting tale of the construction and subsequent journeys of the last whale ship built in Mattapoisett and this newspaper’s namesake, the bark Wanderer. Mendell recounted the yellow pine and live oak, the charismatic caulkers and other builders, and the fact that the Wanderer found its greatest successes in the early 1900s before its demise at Cuttyhunk. The Lions were collecting non-perishable food and unwrapped new toys to distribute to those in need during the holiday.
