Mattapoisett Firefighters Association Chowder Competition424 viewsThe 2nd Annual Mattapoisett Firefighters Association Chowder Competition was well attended this Sunday, September 18, behind the Knights of Columbus on Route 6. Two categories – professional establishment and public safety – competed for best judged chowder and people’s choice. Behold, the locals who fit that description as they enjoy a frosty January 1st at Mattapoisett Town Beach for the annual Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Plunge! Hundreds lined the beach to take the plunge, with bundled spectators watching from the sidelines and cheering as the plungers charged ahead screaming and shrieking with exhilaration. Mattapoisett Memorial Day424 viewsMattapoisett Board of Selectmen along with members of the American Legion Florence Eastman Post 280, Rep. William Straus, and special guest Col. Chris Kidd attended the Memorial Day observances at Center School on May 28. The Old Hammondtown School concert band under the direction of Cara Kinney played patriotic tunes to a full house, and afterwards the Memorial Day parade headed to the Civil War monument at the library. Mattapoisett Museum424 viewsThe Mattapoisett Museum opened its Summer 2019 exhibit on June 27 titled “Inspiration: Time & Texture.” Local artists, including members of Center School’s third grade class, created works of art inspired by objects in the museum or of historical significance to the town. Family Fun Festival 424 viewsFamilies came out in record numbers to enjoy the 4th Annual Fall Free Family Fun Festival sponsored by the Mattapoisett’s Lion Club on October 19 held at Shipyard Park. Bruce Rocha of the club estimated attendance at over 400. Kids and adults alike enjoyed free face painting, bowling with pumpkins, a corn hole toss, snacks, hayrides to Ned’s Point and, yes, free pumpkins to take home.
