Lost Elm465 viewsMattapoisett has lost one of the last remaining American elm trees planted throughout the community during the mid-twentieth century. Tree Warden Roland Cote said that despite valiant efforts over the past year to save this once grand specimen located in Shipyard Park, the tree lost its battle with Dutch Elm disease. Concern over public safety helped Cote make the difficult decision to take the tree down. Cote said a red maple tree would be planted nearby. Photo by Marilou Newell

The event, which attracted over 400 people, raised money to benefit BAM Foundation, Inc., a New Bedford non-profit which donates money to South Coast families dealing with members who have cancer. Wanderer Lecture464 viewsRecently retired Seth Mendell delivered his last lecture for a while at the Mattapoisett Historical Society last Thursday night. The presentation was a riveting tale of the construction and subsequent journeys of the last whale ship built in Mattapoisett and this newspaper’s namesake, the bark Wanderer. Mendell recounted the yellow pine and live oak, the charismatic caulkers and other builders, and the fact that the Wanderer found its greatest successes in the early 1900s before its demise at Cuttyhunk.
